My Favourite Natural Beauty Products

One of the first posts I wrote on my blog was about beauty, which is funny as I decided to concentrate on sustainable fashion, but I’ve realised my focus is much wider than that. I wanted to write about beauty a little bit because I was going through a phase when I was looking for products that were cruelty-free and natural, instead of buying the chemical-infused products from the high street which were tested on animals. I have come a long way since then trying many products, some of which didn’t suit me, some of which did and I am finally in a place where I am happy with the selection I have and wanted to share it in case anybody else is looking for great natural beauty products. I must say that I am not a vegan and although some of these products might be vegan, it is not the thing that I require from the products I use. I look for natural ingredients, not tested on animals, organic if possible, sustainably sourced and produced if possible, small company, zero waste if possible. Not all of my values match in each of these products and therefore at some point, the list might change if I find something better.

My Favourite Natural Beauty Products - byLiiL

This list is only for the products that I love and use continuously and have bought several times or am planning to keep buying. It is missing shampoo, as I will be doing a separate post about the different shampoo bars that I like. As well as, the body wash, as I keep changing this from different vegan and small company versions to Lush bars. If there is something else I haven’t named yet it’s because I haven’t found one that I like or use multiple different ones.

Ren Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream

Vegan/Cruelty-free/Manufactured in the UK/Paraben free/Sulphate free/Silicone free/Not tested on animals

“Designed to repair skins natural barriers, calm, hydrate and soothe sensitive skin” is what Ren say about their day cream. It has blackcurrant seed oil, seabuckthorn berry oil and Camellia oil as natural bio-active ingredients.

For me, this is the only moisturiser that is hydrating enough without being greasy for the day. It has slightly thick creamy consistency which feels lovely on the skin and it works great as the base for make-up as well.

– The packaging isn’t the best, as it is a plastic pump bottle where it can be difficult to get the exact amount of product that you want, and you can never get every single drip out of there. I wish it was also certified organic. It is a bit pricy but it lasts me a long time!

Madara Regenerating Night Cream

Not tested on animals/Natural/Certified organic/Vegan

“Antioxidant rich moisturiser with skin regenerating extracts of Northern Hop, Barley germs and Tomato.” This moisturiser has a lovely creamy consistency and it really feels regenerating when I use it during the night. On its own, it is not enough to hydrate my skin during the coldest winter months, but at other times it is very hydrating. The price is fairly high but it is for a 50ml bottle in which you get a lot of product.

– The same as for the previous, it is a plastic pump bottle and once actually I had to do a complaint as there was no product coming from the bottle no matter how much I was pumping it. It could also more clear on its use of parabens, silicons and sulphates.

BioSelect Illuminating Anti Fatigue Eye Contour Cream

Certified organic/Not tested on animals/Silicone free/Paraben free

This eye cream is creamy and thick, so it hydrates well, but it doesn’t get greasy. It lights up my under eyes, although not quite as well as an illuminator, but that is not what I look from it. My under eyes get easily dry, but I haven’t had any problems since I started using this one. The jar, in which it comes, is handy and really big. For the price, you pay you get a lot of product!

– The jar has a plastic top, which is not ideal.

Evolve Miracle Facial Oil

Natural/Vegan/Cruelty-free/Eco-friendly/No toxic chemicals/Handcrafted

This is a lovely quite light oil with the scent of rosehip. It’s so light that I could use it as a moisturiser and it is hydrating and balancing enough. I love taking it with me when I go on holidays as it is so hydrating! This is made in small batches and hand made in the UK  which makes it all that much more special. The price is very reasonable as well!

– The only issue really is that it’s not certified organic, but it’s such a small brand it might be financially not feasible for them yet.

Burt’s and Bees

Not tested on animals/Cruelty-free/Natural/Paraben free/Phthalate free/Petrolatum-free

I am quite happy to use any of them, but at the moment my favourites are Ultra Conditioning or Coconut and Pear, both are very moisturising and smell nice. Their lip balms are very moisturising, especially these two! It is quite low-priced.

– I would prefer if it would not be under an unethical company. Also, the packaging is plastic and although it is natural ingredients it is not certified organic.

Evolve Hyaluronic Serum 200

Natural/Vegan/Cruelty-free/Eco-friendly/No toxic chemicals/Handcrafted

Very gentle and hydrating serum. It doesn’t have much of a scent, but I quite like that. It is handcrafted in the UK in small batches and won lots of awards, which I am not surprised about.

– My skin seems to need quite a lot of this product and I run out of it quite quickly, which can get quite pricey.

My Favourite Natural Beauty Products

Evolve Gentle Cleansing Melt

Natural/Vegan/Cruelty-free/Eco-friendly/No toxic chemicals/Handcrafted

Similarly to previous Evolve products, it is handcrafted in the UK in small batches. This is the best cleanser I have found and I absolutely love it! It is thick and luxurious. It soothes, calms and hydrates, and leaves your skin feeling moisturised but clean. They recommend mixing a little of bit of it with water that you can then use as a milky cleanser, but I like to massage it into my skin, let it work for a minute or two and then wipe it away with a hot and moist muslin cloth. It gets away my make-up quite well too. For a cleanser, it might feel that the price is high, but this actually lasts me for ages as you only need a little bit of the product.

– It is a bit pricey and is not certified organic. Also, the lid of the jar is plastic.

Evolve Radiant Glow Organic Face Mask

Natural/Vegan/Cruelty-free/Eco-friendly/No toxic chemicals/Handcrafted

This is a combination of mask and scrub with a delicious chocolatey scent, almost good enough to eat. You can lather it on and let it stay for a few minutes to let it sink in, or just use it as a scrub. Mixing it with water makes it milky but it still has lovely little beads to scrub (no microplastics here). This is absolutely lovely to use and although I didn’t originally really like the scent of chocolate in it (it is quite strong and just makes you want to eat chocolate), I don’t might the scent now. It is also hand made in small batches in the UK.

– The lid is plastic and it is not certified organic.

Sukin Oil Clarifying Facial Tonic

Natural/Not tested on animals/Vegan/Paraben free/Sulphate free/Silicon free

Gentle tonic that isn’t drying, but also gets rid of make-up and is refreshing. I usually use it after cleansing my skin and in the mornings before applying moisturiser to hydrate. I love that it also has only a few ingredients and no nasties.

– The only minus I have is the packaging which is plastic.

My Favourite Natural Beauty Products - byLiiL

Madara City CC Cream

Certified organic/Natural/Not tested on animals/Cruelty-free/Paraben free/Sulphate free

“This anti-pollution CC cream corrects all skin tone imperfections, including dullness, redness, sallowness and dark spots. Scientifically proven to shield your skin from urban pollutants to protect skin microbiome, prevent clogged pores and inflammation. With broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen and deeply hydrating hyaluronic acid.” That pretty much sums it up. For me, it works excellently leaving nice even and glowy but not shiny finish. My face feels moisturised throughout the day and not cloggy at all. It has a nice and creamy consistency that works well with a foundation brush but could work with a sponge as well.

– It is really pricey and although the product lasts for quite a long time I also usually need quite a lot of it per application. It is also in plastic packaging which is not ideal.

Living Nature Natural Concealer

Not-tested on Animals/Vegetarian/Paraben free/Natural product/Certified Organic

Concealer with a creamy consistency that conceals well without looking cakey and is not drying. It is the only concealer that doesn’t dry my under eyes that I’ve tried. And the shade is great for under eyes.

– The last one I bought got a bit watery, probably because it got too warm, but I rather enjoyed the creamy consistency. Also, it is very pricey but little goes a long way!

Lumene Extreme Precision Eyebrow Pencil

Natural/Cruelty-free/Not tested on animals/Sustainable ingredient sourcing/Paraben free/Phthalates free

This is an eyebrow pencil with the right shade for me. It is difficult to find good eyebrow pencils for some reason and I’ve been long hunting for one until I found this one from Lumene when I was in Finland the last time. I like the spread of the colour and that I have a brush on the other end.

– It is not certified organic. I know that all Lumene products are natural, but I had to look for the information instead of it being on the page so it would be easily recognisable. Also, it has plastic caps.

I do love to try new products alongside using these and sometimes I manage to find a better product than the one I am already using. So this list might look a bit different even in a years time.

The Green Eco Box – Subscription Box That Does Good

(Suomeksi skrollaa alas)

I was kindly sent a Beauty in the Box* by Green Eco Box to test and enjoy. I am really excited to introduce you to this box as I enjoyed exploring it and I really feel they make a difference!

The Green Eco Box is a company that offers you some wonderful artisan products from around the globe whilst promoting more environmental living and it fights against the big problems in our world today: global warming, deforestation and loss of biodiversity. It is a one of a kind product and service with a small but dedicated team behind it to make it all happen. At the heart of the company is the love for our planet and it’s inhabitants, which can be seen in every aspect the company does from their values and ethos to their products.

The Green Eco Box - Subscription Box That Does Good - byLiiL

The Green Eco Box has two types of boxes on offer the Beauty in the box and Bee happy box. Bee happy box is a monthly subscription box that is full of amazing sounding artisan gourmet foods like jams, biscuits and tees, whereas the Beauty in the box (which I received) is a bimonthly box full of artisan beauty products. What is really amazing is that that Green Eco Box has partnered up with amazing charities, for example for the sale of each box the organisation 1 tree will plant a tree in either Haiti or California and depending on which box you choose they gift 3-5€ to WWF or Greenpeace.

In the box I received: Shower Gel from Creamy Stuff, Shampoo bar from Sauberkunst, Soap from Les Belles de Savon, Bath melt from Autour du Bain, samples of chocolates from Valrhona, Tea from Higher Living and a sheet of seeds, which when planted will grow carrots. The seeds are untreated which is all the better for me and the soil I will plant them into! I can’t wait to try it out and see if I can grow my own carrots. My kitchen garden is growing!!

My Experience

Shower Gel – Creamy Stuff

A pomelo scented shower gel which is not tested on animals and is paraffin, paraben and palm oil free. In addition, it is handmade and vegan.

I like the scent of the shower gel, although it is a bit sweet. The consistency was milky, but little goes a long way and it felt luxurious when showering with it. The only criticism I have for the product is that it is in a plastic bottle and therefore I don’t know if I can recycle it here. I have since learned the packaging was made out of recycled plastic and is BPA free, which is excellent!

Shampoo bar – Sauberkunst

A mango lassi scented shampoo bar that is cruelty-free approved by PETA and handmade with wonderful ingredients that will make sure your hair will only get nourishment and none of the ugly stuff.

This was definitely my favourite product from the box and one that I will probably keep buying as it became one of my favourite shampoos ever! The scent was fairly strong, thankfully I like mangoes. And the first time I used it I had to lather quite a lot to get enough product into my hair, however, it washed my hair wonderfully but still gently, as it doesn’t have any soap in the shampoo. The bar is small and would travel well, but also I have washed my hair several times using it and I don’t think it has diminished at all, so will definitely last me a long time!

Soap – Les Belles de Savon

This is a multifunction ‘soap’ that is suitable for hair, body and face, as well as due to it’s natural and perfume free nature it’s suitable for all different skin types and even for babies. It’s full of wonderful ingredients that will make your skin soft and your hair clean.

I tried this bar on my hair, which it washed well and on my skin which was left soft. The scent is fairly natural, maybe slightly peaty, but not in a bad way. The scent after the shower is wonderfully natural. The actual bar is like a balm and a pleasure to touch and use. This would be a wonderful product to take with you when travelling as you won’t need any other product in the shower with you!

The Green Eco Box - Subscription Box That Does Good - byLiiL

The chocolates were nice and the teas had a wonderful flavour of not being too berry, which is usually what I dislike in teas like this. I especially loved the tea with watermelon as it was flavourful but fresh, yummy!

I loved trying these different products and appreciated the uniqueness of each product and the work Green eco box does. What I also like is that if you liked any of the products you tried or if you missed a product that you would like to try you can buy them from the Green Eco Box eboutique!

I think the box is a unique way to be introduced to new brands you wouldn’t otherwise find and like me fall in love with new products. Each box contains something new and interesting and you know that the money you put into the box goes towards supporting small brands and their craft as well as great charities, which I love! I also like that many of the products were third-party certified which made me trust the work Green Eco Box is doing that much more!

Green Eco Box:illa on kahden tyyppistä boxia tarjolla: Beauty in the box ja Bee happy box.

The Green Eco Box - Subscription Box That Does Good - byLiiL

Kokemukseni

Creamy Stuff – Suihkugeeli

Organic Beauty and Wellbeing Week

This week 7th to 13th of May was an Organic Beauty and Wellbeing week. Unfortunately, I stumbled upon this information too late and therefore am only posting about it now, however, I think the point of any such week is to raise awareness and educate people rather than only to make changes that week. So for everybody who might’ve missed this week and it’s message keep reading.

Organic Beauty and Wellbeing Week

WHY SHOULD WE USE ORGANIC BEAUTY PRODUCT?

What we put on our skin is as important as what we eat; it can nourish our bodies or it can harm it. Skin is the biggest organ in our body and absorbs everything we put on it or it gets in touch with and it is why we should be quite considered of what we put on our skin, especially as we use various cosmetics daily. Do you know what is in your cosmetics and how it affects you?

The mainstream cosmetics are often advertised as containing good for us ingredients or have attractive qualities, but what they don’t say is how they achieve these qualities.  Many cosmetics products contain harmful chemicals; such as parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, fragrances, not even talking about pesticides used in farming some of the ingredients, that are then absorbed by our skin and end up in our bloodstream or get stuck inside our bodies causing irritation, allergies, cancer and other health problems. According to Soil Association from the 10,000 chemicals commonly used in our cosmetics, only 10% have safety data. Research shows that organic ingredients have higher levels of antioxidants than mainstream cosmetic products that lack the nourishment we require.

When thinking about environmental sustainability organic beauty is better as well. The production of our beauty products that can harm the environment with chemicals flushed in the waterways or in the local environment. However, what harms the environment more is when we wash the product of our skin it flushed into our waterways. Many chemical components used in the mainstream cosmetics doesn’t break in nature but rather accumulates and harms the ecosystem.

Organic Beauty and Wellbeing Week

COSMOS

The big problem with beauty industry is that it is not regulated. When a company wants to hop along the natural and organic marketing train it can do that without actually proving it to anyone. The only way to make sure something really is organic is if they have independently certified organic certification. That is where few independent organic and natural certification bodies came into play. The few that I know of are Soil Association from the UK and Ecocert from France. To combat the problem with regulations in the beauty industry several European independent beauty certification organisations (Soil Association, Ecocert, ICEA, BDIH and Cosmebio) have come together to create a harmonised standardisation COSMOS which is a European wide cosmetic organic standard. It is owned and managed by a non-for profit international organisation. Since it’s founding in 2017 other certification bodies, including some out of EU, have joined to certify to the harmonised standard.

Each company that wished to have a COSMOS Organic or COSMOS Natural certification must be certified by an independent certification body, meaning one of the certification bodies following COSMOS standard. Each of these companies will be checked on their natural ingredients, no ingredients can be from endangered species, no GMO products and any chemicals must respect the principles of Green Chemistry. In addition, all ingredients should be biodegradable, water usage should comply with hygiene standards and they should report with their water and energy usage, as well as environmental waste management plans. All companies wishing to get the certification need to minimise their packaging and ensure it is environmentally friendly. Soil Association also reviews marketing messages to ensure there is no greenwashing.

#WHATIMMADEOF

This week beauty certification bodies want you to ask what your beauty products are made of for wider awareness of what is in your beauty products. I think it is an excellent campaign, similarly to “who made my clothes” and I encourage everybody to check their cosmetics box and review how many ingredients they can recognise. When I found this campaign I instantly started wondering whether the BIOselect eye cream I got from Crete was really certified organic, as it was a new brand for me, and had to go and check. To my happiness, it is certified by ICEA, which is one of the founding companies of COSMOS. That made me very happy and I liked using the cream even more since then, but more about the cream in another post.

You can find more about the campaign, about organic certifications and about organic beauty on Soil Association website, which I really recommend checking out! Also, check out the COSMOS website.

A Beauty Tip – My Favourite Lush Product At The Moment

I was asking my friend to recommend me a good cuticle cream to combat my very dry cuticle and when she mentioned the Lemony Flutter by Lush I marched into the shop and got myself a small tub of it.

A Beauty Tip - My Favourite Lush Product At The Moment - byLiiL

It goes without saying that I am in love with the product now. It has a lovely lemony scent without being overpowering, it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave greasy stains and it works on any patch of dry skin. I’m loving it! I use it daily and it doesn’t look like I would get bored of it anytime soon. I also love that Lush recycled their tubs so I am not just buying a bunch of packaging that goes to the landfill, but rather as soon as I have collected five tubs I will carry them back to Lush and receive a face mask for free, hurray for that!

The FINE Deodorant

Like everybody else I was long on the hunt for the natural deodorant that is aluminium and alcohol-free, is not drying and actually works. It sounds like an impossible task and I really felt as though it was! I tried a bunch of them from the high street to ordering one from MADARA, but nothing seemed to tick each box. There were several others online, which nevertheless of the great reviews I was afraid to order due to their higher price and no promise for it working for me. Your armpits, as well as any other part of your skin, can behave in a different way from everybody else and although something might work for your friends and family, doesn’t mean that it will work for you. I thought I had to settle for something that wasn’t exactly working for me but was the best option from everything I had tried until my friend brought me a sample of Fine cream deodorant.

The FINE Deodorant - byLiiL

I had never heard of this brand or their deodorants before, but my friend reassured me it was her favourite deodorant brand since she had tried it. I was excited to try the product but quite sceptical whether it would work for me and what a surprise it was! After only a first application I lasted without extra application for at least 2 days. There wasn’t even the slightest scent of odour, my armpits were feeling moisturised, dry and comfortable. Once I finished the sample sachet I knew I had to get the real deal!

The FINE Deodorant - byLiiL

FINE Deodorant is a natural, organic and vegan deodorant designed in Berlin, Germany. Their cream deodorants come in two scents; vetiver geranium and cedar bergamot. I’ve only tried vetiver geranium, which I absolutely loved, but am quite interested in the other scent as well. What for me was the most exciting thing is they are alcohol and aluminium free, how amazing is that! The idea for Fine deodorant came from the need for a natural deodorant that is healthy and it works, and that is exactly what they created. Funnily enough, they share this idea even in the name:

FINE is Italian for “end”. And this is exactly what FINE does: it finally puts an end to undesired odors from sweat that are often paired with feeling uncomfortable. And last but not least it ends your search for a clean and efficient deodorant. FINE also means “great” and “beautiful” in English of course. And that is FINE in one word!

The deodorants come in glass jars with a wooden spatula and they have the original scent in a tube as well if you prefer that. FINE is not tested on animals, it is GMO-free, Nano free, Parabens free, Gluten free, Petrochemical free and it does not include any synthetic preservatives, fragrances or fillers. They list all the ingredients used in their products on their website and even explain about their ingredients, although that is in German.

The FINE Deodorant - byLiiL

If you are not familiar with the cream deodorants, they might seem funny as it is actually a cream that you spread into your armpits with your fingers. I use a pea-sized amount, after a shower, that I massage into my armpits and enjoy the wonderful smell of vetiver and geranium that smells clean and invigorating. It dries in an instant and you do not get those white marks on your tops when putting them on!

One of my favourite things about this brand is that they offer sample sachets for you to try their product before committing to the quite heftily priced product (30mg is around €28). If you got interested, and I think you should have as my life completely turned for the better after FINE, you can find their products on their own website, which although is beautiful is not yet quite perfectly developed for the English reading customer (you are still able to order easily, but the terms and conditions are in German). They also have several other shops selling them in Berlin, all around Germany and in several online shops around Europe. In the UK you can find FINE in The Method, an Edinburgh based lifestyle store.

Have you heard of FINE Deodorant before?

Georganix Natural Toothpaste Review

What first attracted me to natural toothpaste was the small ingredient lists and the absence of extra chemicals in them. Mouth and our teeth is one of the vital elements for our health, so why would I want to add any more chemicals to wash that area? I don’t! But then again I want to make sure that I will find the natural toothpaste that works effectively at keeping the health of my mouth and teeth healthy and out of the dentist appointments. It took me a long time to find one that I would like to try, but georganix fit most of my requirements; it is locally produced in the UK, it is a small company, it has good feedback for the product and the seller, it is reasonably priced and it had enough information on the product.

Georganix Natural Toothpaste Review - byLiiL

Georganix

Georganix is a small brand who manufactures natural and organic oral care products from toothpaste and mouthwashes to toothbrushes and nutritional supplements. Their ethos is to produce oral care without chemicals and preservatives, but rather with natural ingredients which will naturally remineralise the teeth. The company is very open with ingredients they use for each of their products and like to post on their blog about oral health care to assist their clients with it. Sounds great right! Their product prices range from £3.90 for their bamboo toothbrushes to £6.90 for a 60ml jar of toothpaste or 100ml bottle of mouthwash.

Georganix Natural Toothpaste Review - byLiiL

Georganics Remineralizing Natural Organic Coconut Oil Whitening Toothpaste – Spearmint

The toothpaste I tried was the spearmint flavoured one. I read that the flavour and texture are so different from the generic one so I was hoping with the spearmint flavour it would at least remind me of the product that I am so used to. The smell definitely did remind me of toothpaste and I liked it so much I couldn’t wait to use it. Until I tried it the first time and almost felt sick. The paste is made out of clay and coconut oil mostly and although the essential oils to provide it with some scent, the flavour and texture are much closer to clay.

It took me a couple of days to be okay with putting the paste into my mouth and a couple of weeks to get used to it. The aftertaste or feel is not the refreshed one, like when using the generic toothpaste, and I generally do feel the need for mouthwash or oil pulling, but then again I have no problem eating or drinking right afterwards either. However, since I started using it I haven’t had any problems with my teeth. I really feel healthy in my mouth and it is quite amazing to find a toothpaste that leaves me feeling like that! I think we are so used to the generic, chemical full, products that are on the market now, that we feel weird with anything that feels different, but it is all about getting our body and taste buds used to the natural ingredients.

What I wished in addition

All of this sounds really great, doesn’t it! Well, although I find that they are really trying to make their customers feel comfortable with their products, I didn’t find much of anything to support any sustainable practices other than the toothbrushes being made from bamboo and their products being in glass jars. A bit more transparency on this side would really make the difference with me being completely happy with using this brand and recommending it to everybody.

MOSSA Micellar Water Review

I recently finished a bottle of micellar water, which I learned that was not a cruelty-free brand and went through a process of finding a new one that would be better, natural and cruelty-free. I decided to test the Mossa micellar water first. The price point off £10 for 200ml is higher than similar products on the high street, but it is much less than the luxury products.

This micellar water is made with raspberries and hyaluronic acid. It sounds very scientific and I was a bit scared to try it out, mainly because of the word ‘acid’ on it. My skin can be sensitive and although it hasn’t reacted badly to other, exfoliating acids, I am still always cautious with them. Using the product made me learn that hyaluronic acid is not actually an exfoliating ingredient, but rather a hydrating one whilst still being natural.

Since I started using this micellar water my skin hasn’t been dry and feels soft. It makes me want to use it all the time! I apply a little bit of the product on a muslin cloth and wipe my face with it thoroughly. It doesn’t get rid of my eye make-up completely, so I do need to use other products in addition to this one. On the other hand, when I don’t have make-up on this micellar water makes me feel fresh. I wish there was more of the product, as I am afraid it will finish way too quickly!

I definitely recommend the Mossa micellar water for any kind of skin type, but especially if your skin needs more hydration!
