Happy Favourites of August 2018

Visit to the Purple Cat Cafe – Purple cat cafe is the first cat cafe in Glasgow and it is an experience worth going to… especially if you like cats. To get in you should book a time slot, as they book full really quickly, we were lucky that we got the last spot left right at the time when we showed up. Although they serve food and drinks which are tasty and offer vegetarian as well as vegan options, the main attraction there is, of course, the cats, which there is around a dozen. All the cats are friendly although don’t always want people touching them, however, if you offer them a treat they just might pay more attention to you. What I really enjoyed about the experience though was the atmosphere. I felt relaxed looking at what the cats were up to. Climbing their trees as they were able to go all around the cafe including nearly the ceiling where they had a shelf and a little nook to sleep in. We got a spot next to a sleeping fur baby, who didn’t wake up to anything but looked like an angel whilst sleeping, until it was time for the treats to which he woke in a second and happily came to collect his treats. I definitely recommend visiting this place and spending some quality time watching the feline’s life.

European Championship 2018 in Glasgow – I really wanted to go and see one of the events, but didn’t really have time for it, however, on one Saturday whilst being out and about in the city centre I realised the cycling was on. It was at the same time exciting as it was a bit annoying. Half of the city was fenced and to get to the other side of the road, which usually took you less than a minute, now took you around a couple of blocks and then through the very crowded little passing spot. However, this is not a usual occurrence in Glasgow, so I decided to enjoy the exciting atmosphere of the city and clapped alongside to encourage the cyclists. Funnily enough, two German cyclers had time to chat with each other while doing the race.

Local Heroes – Made In Glasgow – An amazing showcase of design in Glasgow that was up for the duration of the European Championships. We got gifted a limited edition print by Emer Tumilty and saw some great new designers who I hadn’t even heard about. Scotland is truly full of great and innovative designers!

Trying Out Malaysian Food – I’ve never before tried Malaysian food but when my friend came back from her holiday and suggested a dinner to catch up a restaurant close by came to my mind and we decided to catch up there. The food was very tasty, although mine was so spicy I don’t remember ever eating as spicy food, except that one time when we cooked with singapore spice set and put too much of it into our food. Unfortunately, the restaurant was trying to be too fancy that we felt being pestered by the waiters too much and the atmosphere a bit pretentious. Nevertheless, the evening with friends was lovely and a breath of fresh air!

New Plants – If I see a plant that I fall in love with it I have to get it. So in August, I added two new plants to the collection: a cute new succulent and a gorgeous Calathea. I really need more space for plants in my house though!

Green Eco Box – That I received in August was truly a joy and I loved getting to know the company well and the beautiful products! If you want to read more about it check it here.

Bear and the Nightingale – I just finished this beautiful, magical book that questioned the relationship between church and old beliefs, and a woman’s place in a man’s world. I loved it!!

Void – The only thing I went to see during the Edinburgh Fringe was a show called Void which was essentially a dance performance showing a woman who was due to a highway accident been thrown into an area not suitable for people and from where it doesn’t seem that she could get away. The performance was very moving and I especially liked the performer, Mele Broomes, who was brilliant. The whole thing worked together well and left me moved and thinking.

My Ninja – The cat in the pictures who likes attention so much that she decided as soon as I started to take pictures that she needs to be in them.

Happy Favourites of July 2018

July has been the hardest month of the year. It started with grief and it didn’t get much better. Every one of us faces times that are not so easy, but finding little things that make you happy will show you that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It is funny to think that the beginning of July was so warm, as now it is fairly cold in Scotland. It is a relief, even though throughout winter I know I will be wishing back those warm summer days.

Happy Favourites of July 2018 - byLiiL

New coffee shop – I don’t go out a lot for coffee or food, but cooped up in my house all day working makes me want to get out every now and again. I already have my favourite spots in my local area and am happy when a new great place opens up. Space speciality coffee has a great coffee selection, amazing cakes and beautiful and instagrammable interior!

Seagull babies – There are two seagull babies on the roof of the house I see from our window and this week we’ve been seeing them learning to fly. It is absolutely adorable seeing their clumsy tries but eventually succeeding. I could spend hours just looking at them in amazement!

The Wonder – I’ve been reading the book by Emma Donoghue, the one who also wrote ‘Room’. She is an amazing writer and I can’t seem to be able to put the book down!

Sustainable period – I finally got myself a menstrual cup and I can’t wait to have a try!

Campaigns

A zero-waste shop into Edinburgh – The crowdfunding for a new zero-waste shop that is based on community interest and using profits to support oceanic cleanup and on the local environmental project. It sounds great and especially if you are based in Edinburgh I recommend supporting them!

Team Waveney walk for water – A team of friends and their children have decided to walk for water to raise awareness of the hardship women and children face when they do not have access for clean water easily like we do. They want to mirror the walk to understand the hardship, raise awareness and raise money for those communities. This is an amazing campaign and an important issue to be talked about. I really recommend supporting it!

Support a Not-for-profit Zero Waste Glasgow – A campaign to support a stall which raises awareness of zero-waste in Glasgow and to reduce plastic waste. An important campaign, especially for Glasgwegians!

Excitedly expecting The Favourite – This short teaser trailer had me completely hooked!

memory: no. twothousandsevenhundredandtwentyfive – A beautiful short video by my friend that portrays grief. Made me cry and I believe would make anybody who is going through grief. It is beautiful, sad and content at the end.

Happy Favourites of the Week – Spring Time

Visiting Friends – We had a fun night with friends playing Cards Against Humanity with visiting friends. We hadn’t had laughs quite as good in a long time! It was an absolutely fun night!

Easter Weekend – Although, I was working on a couple of the days during the Easter break it was still amazingly relaxing weekend full of delicious food and chocolate.

New Deodorant – I absolutely love my deodorant from Fine, but with its price tag I am happy that I’ve found another one, closer to home that has a much better price tag for my wallet! Evolve beauty have recently come out with a deodorant which is lovely! It is moisturising and doesn’t have a strong scent, in addition, it actually works and it’s made out of all natural ingredients. What more could you want! I do warn though, it has bicarbonate of soda. I wasn’t sure if my armpits could handle it and that is why I haven’t tried most natural deodorants in the UK, but Evolve also have small sample packs which helps you try whether it is suitable for you!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Spring Time - byLiiL

Spring Flowers – Spring brings spring flowers and oh how I love looking at them and smelling them, it is just such a delight! Having fresh tulips in the house lifts your mood like nothing else! I can’t wait until mongolia and cherry trees start to flower in front of our house. I’ve seen them flowering elsewhere, but I live slightly higher up and it comes later here.

A Lifecycle of a T-shirt – This little Ted-ed clip was great at explaining the process a garment goes through and how it pollutes the world. Although, I would’ve loved if they added how sustainable fashion is different to show a comparison! Still, the clip is very informative and interesting, especially for people who do not work in the fashion industry.

I finally finished Women Who Run With The Wolves – It felt like a process going through this book. It is not an easy read, but then again it is not supposed to be. It is a book full of ancient women’s wisdom for empowering women to be themselves and understand the psychological cycles they go through at different times of their life. It taught me a lot and I really recommend everybody to read it!

Cat’s New Scratching Post – Actually it is their first proper scratching post. I wanted them to stop scratching our couch! So I finally got a small scratching post with a little toy in it and two places to sit and it is slowly gaining acceptance with the cats. One of them loves to scratch it and the other one loves another spot for him to sit and stare at us from.

Happy Favourites of the Week – Something Good

A gentleman in Moscow – I finally finished this book! I was very intrigued to read it, but from the beginning, I felt like the book was dragging. It was written in a very upbeat sense, but somehow I found it hard to get my head around the book. Until I got to the middle point and then I was hooked. This book is situated in Moscow at a time of revolution and tells a story of how people had to adapt to their new lives. Unlike many such books, this held the focus on beautiful relationships, beautiful memories and beautiful food.

Happy Favourites of the Week - Something Good - byLiiL

Starting Good Summit – I get to participate in a starting good virtual summit where I get to expand my knowledge on sustainability issues and how to work to make things better! There have already been so many great talks and inspiring ideas. Ernesto Sirolli’s Changing the way how to give aid was very passionate, but also with a great point! And Jan talking about the future of work was something everybody should listen to, to be prepared for the future of their careers. If you are interested in this go check them out: Starting Good Virtual Summit.

Fiance making dessert – This is a rare treat to get fiance to make me different desserts that we’ve not tried before. I am usually the one who makes desserts so it is great that I do not have to be doing it!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Something Good - byLiiL

Spring is on its way – It might not seem like spring is coming, but there have been a couple of nice sunny days, which are rare in Glasgow. Also, the ever-horrible/wonderful appearing spiders… they are back. I might be okay with them if the warmer days are on their way! We moved our clocks last night, and although today is a bit of a tired day I know that there is more sunlight every single day! I can’t wait for Easter next weekend!

Meeting new inspiring people – I am doing a certain course this week, where I’ve met several very inspiring people with different skills that I am very admirable of. It’s wonderful to see people who are different and can work so well together!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Something Good - byLiiL

World Water Day and Earth Hour – This week saw two important dates to connect us to our planet, one for the water and one for the earth. Both immensely important and I was really inspired by all the posts on Instagram and around the web to support this connectivity. We are all fighting to have a better place to live in and have a better place for our future generations so we should be working on this together!

I won a book – I am taking part in the Our Shared Shelf – book club and a couple of weeks ago got the notice that I won their last book club book, which I hadn’t yet read or acquired: Why I No Longer Talk About Race With White People. I am excited to read the book and about winning a small competition!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Something Good - byLiiL

The Best Coconut Oil – We often don’t even think whether the food we eat actually is sustainably produced. So I was really happy to find out that Reviews.com did a research into several coconut oil brands and their coconut oil production and checked which ones are actually produced sustainably. Luckily for readers who live in states, this review considers mainly USA brands. For the rest of you, I thought this was a great article to see how you can question what you put into and onto your body. How to figure out whether it is sustainably sourced and how to go about it. I would still love to learn a lot more about this topic but this was definitely a great start!

Happy Favourites of the Week – International Women’s Day

Snow – There are good and bad things with the snow, but as I try to look at the positive in my daily life, I choose to enjoy the few extra days that I could spend at home with my other half, cosying with hot drinks and looking out at the beautiful scenery. The bad stuff, you can read either in my blog post about why we should be grateful for having a home or check my Instagram account.

Happy Favourites of the Week - International Women's Day - byLiiL

iZombie – The funny thing is that I can’t stand watching zombie related movies or tv-shows (still for some reason I’ve seen way too many…). I feel uncomfortable watching them and it’s also why it’s taken so long to start watching iZombie. But my friend talked me into watching it and now I’m hooked. Although, one night, after watching the show for way too long, I saw dreams of zombies the whole night and it frustrated me a lot. Now I try to do something else right before going to bed!

International Women’s Day – Celebrating a day that celebrates all women is awesome, isn’t it! I was so inspired by all the empowering messages on Instagram and the girl power going on there. It brings a smile on my face every time I check Instagram.

Happy Favourites of the Week - International Women's Day - byLiiL

Succulent Gift – I also love a present I got from my fiance for the women’s day. He brought me two little succulent plants. So cute and a gift that will bring me happiness for a long time!

Seeing the Musical Priscilla – My friend gave me a present of taking me to a theatre to see the musical Priscilla and it was fabulous! The musical was very well done, with great singers and actors, absolutely amazing costumes and with so much laughter. Even though it wasn’t an audience participation show, the whole audience was involved. There was whistling, clapping, hurrays, laughing, so much fun!

New From Lush – I’ve been out of my favourite Lush products for a while now, but now finally that the snow melted I could go and get the items I was desperately needing; shampoo, cuticle cream – can’t live without them! Also now my bathroom smells like Lush again!

Happy Favourites of the Week – Friends and Lilies

Black Panther – A movie that everybody has been talking about and I’ve finally seen it. I quite liked the movie, even though it was part of the Marvel series which I am not the biggest fan of. The movie had a very interesting background story to it, and I liked the setting and the cultural notes to it. Actors and Actresses were great and I loved the visual look of the movie!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Friends and Lilies - byLiiL

My Valentine’s Day Lillies – I love having flowers in my house and to my great surprise I received the most beautiful bouquet of ethically sourced lilies, my favourite flower, from my fiance. They are so beautiful and make the whole flat smell absolutely wonderful!

Watching the Olympic Figure Skating – I think I mention watching figure skating whenever I get to watch it, but it is one of those things that makes me happy. Having skated my whole childhood it is both nostalgic and visually pleasing to me, especially when you get to see masters like Patrick Chan, Kaetlyn Osmond and Evgenia Medvedeva perform!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Friends and Lilies - byLiiL

Books – When have books not made me happy? Well, last week I visited charity shops several times and managed to find, accidentally, 12 books that really interested me! Usually, I have a hard time finding one. So I’ve done an accidental book haul, but oh how I enjoy looking forward to reading these amazing books and giving them a “second life”. If you’ve read any of them let me know how you liked them!

A Very Productive Monday – After weeks of feeling rubbish and not being able to really start my days of well, because I’ve had to take an extra rest, starting of Monday productively and getting everything done that I’ve planned and done it well is really uplifting for the week ahead!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Friends and Lilies - byLiiL

Brunch with a Friend – It’s always lovely to see friends, especially if you haven’t had the chance to see them in a long while. Great food in a local pub; I had french toast made with local artisan bread, yummy, and a great chat with a friend, what more can you wish for the weekend!

Visiting a Friend – And accidentally staying up to 5 in the morning just to chat and not noticing how the time past by. It will take me a few days to catch up with my sleeping rhythm, but it was worth it!

Happy Favourites of the Week – Chat and Nap

The Beauty Myth – The feminist book about how women are controlled with beauty. It is not news, but still, a very interesting book as it digs deep into the issues.

Happy Favourites of the Week - Chat and Nap - byLiiL

Get off Facebook Now – I am one of those people who really doesn’t like facebook. I talk about it pretty openly and the answer I get in return is “Oh, you are one of those people” as though there was something wrong with it. The way Facebook has developed doesn’t bring me joy anymore and it is amazing to see that there is a growing network of people who see Facebook as what it is! If you don’t know what it is, then definitely read the article!

Ekaterina: The Rise of Catherine The Great – I am quite fascinated by the Russian history and this is a tv-show on Amazon prime that tells the story about how a young but determined German girl became one of the most celebrated emperors in the Russian history. And it is a story about a powerful woman! It is filmed in multiple languages so you will need to watch it with subtitles, but I found it to be more authentic.

Happy Favourites of the Week - Chat and Nap - byLiiL

Doisy and Dam Date and Himalayan Salt Chocolate – This chocolate is so delicious! I don’t seem to be the only one who thinks it’s delicious, it is always out of stock in shops!

A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers – This was such a beautiful book on cultural differences, especially when considering the relationship between a man and a woman. It is a love story, a story about cultural conflicts and misunderstandings, sexual awakening and becoming independent. I would definitely recommend this book to everybody!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Chat and Nap - byLiiL

A Nap In the Middle Of The Day Under The Sunlight – I love naps, but rarely have time for them with my busy schedule. And naps while the sun is shining sound almost criminal when everybody else is going out to soak up all the energy they can from the rare phenomenon (rare at least in Scotland). But one day I wasn’t feeling well and went to my bed in the middle of the day to take a short nap before going to work. I woke up energised, warmed up from the sunlight in the room and immensely satisfied and happy!

A Chat With And Old Lecturer – I rarely get to talk with my old teachers without disruptions or what is going on in our lives, partly because I still hold them as authority figures in my life, although I left University a couple years ago. Our chat was short but honest and friendly, leaving me uplifted.
