Happy Favourites of the Week – Coffee and Tea

Sunny Day – I can’t remember how many times I’ve actually added sunny days in my happy favourites sections, but it is the one thing that makes me very happy! I left work for another day and went out for a several hour walk and a coffee outside. The sun just nourishes you from inside!

Yoga – I’ve added this into happy favourites before as well. Combined with the sunshine yoga made me feel happy and calm. I actually fell asleep in one very good class. I felt so zen and relaxed! Fortunately, I didn’t start snoring but just dozed in and out of consciousness.

Figure Skating Championship 2017 – I love watching figure skating and the championship is watching the best from the best. Always exciting!

Liquorice and Peppermint Tea – A new Lidl opened close by to our house just a couple weeks ago and I found this amazing tea from there! I love peppermint tea, but sometimes I like something different and this is just the perfect evening tea. The liquorice adds that little bit of sweetness to it as well. Yumm!

Greenery Coffee Table – I am absolutely in love with this coffee table that is easy to make yourself and it is filled with greenery! How lovely would such a coffee table be! I am filing this into my archives to make once I have a space for a coffee table!

“When the Sky Meets the Earth” At Bikini Berlin – A gorgeous installation and a video. The colours are just lovely and I am very sad that I am not visiting Berlin at this time!

Happy Favourites of the Week – Spring Happiness

Sister for a visit

My sister visited me for a few days. It was right at the time when I needed to see her and we had such a lovely time hanging around Glasgow and chatting a lot! We visited new and old places to eat, got inspired in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and tested our knowledge in Harry Potter trivia (#harrypotter4life).

The Ultimate Zero Waste Kit

Ethical Unicorn wrote a post about the Zero Waste Kit by Bag Me. Basically, it was what I have been waiting for!

New sports

I often like to try something new and although I have done some sort of boxing before, it feels like something new when you haven’t done it in a long time. It was a lot of fun and really tough! NK also thought me how to do ball hockey shots.

Walks in the sunshine

The weather has actually been quite diabolical these past few weeks, with sunshine, rain and snow all appearing several times within a day. Fortunately, I have managed to get a walk in the sunshine, warming my mind and heart from the cold winter, in between the greyness.

Weather excitement

I am not a fan of rain and wind, but when I’m at home and watching the weather changing every 15 minutes it does keep the day exciting, whilst distracting me of course. This weather truly makes me feel that I live in Scotland!

Spring flowers

My favourite part about spring after all the light is the spring flowers. Whenever tulips arrive in the stores I get so excited and want to buy more than one bouquet. This time I made an arrangement of pastel coloured tulips and roses, and man they are making me happy!!

New Lush Favourites

It’s not too long since I told you about my favourites from  Lush and now I have some more. It seems there is no going wrong with Lush!

Lush new favourite products

Dark Angels

I’ve used this product before and I still love it, nevertheless of its scary black colour! Dark Angels is a face wash and a scrub. It is made out of charcoal and black sugar, and it cleans the face really well without making it dry and itchy. The scrub is not too harsh and much better on the environment as they are using sugar rather than microbeads to scrub. The only problem with this product, though, is that it actually colours you black and you need to use another soap to get the blackness of you.

Pumice Power

Yes, it has a strange name, but oh is it a wonderful product! This is a foot scrub, with an amazing orange scent. The scrub part feels really gentle but works wonders on your feet. Plus having this product in my bathroom is the most wonderful thing ever! It smells amazing!

Jason and the Argan oil shampoo bar

I told you before about the Seanik shampoo bar, which was amazing. But if possible I like this one even better! The rose scent is lovely, it cleans well and the cleanliness stays for longer than usually with other shampoos for me. It is my trusted shampoo now, whenever I need that!

Happy Favourites of the Week – Finders Keepers

These past two weeks have been full of adventures and my mind has been so full of ideas that I’ve had trouble sleeping. So naturally I am super tired, but thankfully my first happy favourite is here to help me out!

Holiday

I have a week long holiday! It’s not actually a going away holiday, but rather a relaxation and getting my head back to focus. I finished my summer internship yesterday and although I totally loved it and will miss the workplace, I am happy to have a whole week for myself. At the moment I feel that I would just like to sit on the couch and binge watch anything! But I am sure I will come up with many many things to fill my calendar.. I always do!

Shocking Life

This autobiography by Elsa Schiaparelli was so inspiring and interesting! Although Elsa Schiaparelli was a famous fashion designer, the book itself did not concentrate hugely on fashion, but rather on her views on the world at that time. Her likes, dislikes, people she met and the life around her. She lived through both world wars and it was interesting to read what the life was like through different eyes. I completely fell in love with her, because of her attitude to life and strength!

Kenzo advert

I was only today introduced to this advert, which apparently is not news by now, but I loved it! I recognised instantly the similarities to Sia music videos, which I like, however, what got me really inspired was the interpretation by Margaret Qualley! She as well is probably not news to anybody, except to me. I need to watch the Leftovers now (adding it to my binge watching list).

Finders Keepers

Well, actually I found this illustration by Holly Sharpe in my own house. I remember buying the card with this illustration a long time ago at some fair, but somehow it got buried under a bunch of other important stuff. I must hurry and put it on display!

New Phone

On Monday my boyfriend surprised me with a new phone. I’ve been looking for a new phone for about half a year now as my old one has been dying. I finally decided on Nexus 5x and now I finally got it! It has so much longer battery life, almost twice to my previous. It has a lot better picture quality! So good actually it might ease my life that I don’t have to carry my camera with me everywhere. Pictures of the basil in the last post were taken with the phone. I am really excited about my new phone and hope Google did its job as I am planning to be able to use it for several years to come!

Martian

I’ve finally watched this movie. I love sci-fi movies and am so interested in anything to do with space! Martian was a positive take on all the other space movies that I’ve seen (Interstellar, Gravity, Alien, Armageddon etc.). It was completely different to what I was expecting and unexpectedly I didn’t feel anxious at any moment while watching the movie. So if you haven’t seen this movie then I definitely recommend doing so.

Garden in the Kitchen – Growing Basil

I have probably said it before, but I hate waste. I hate wasting food, wasting ingredients, talent, products, anything really. So I am always trying to come up with new ways how this would not happen. It wasn’t too long ago when I was writing about how I was excited that I was able to keep my store bought basil plant alive. Basil is one of those ingredients which I love to use in cooking and keep in my kitchen because of the lovely scent, however, usually the big bushy plant dies before I have been able to take full advantage of it and then I have to buy a new one. I feel kind of wasteful buying new pots of basil just to kill it and then buy a new one, especially as it already is in a pot and I could just grow it myself.

Growing it at home will mean I will save money not buying a new plant every week, it will bring greenery and lovely scent into my kitchen and I will get the satisfaction of being able to keep something green alive and not being wasteful. Several times YeY!

IMG_20160906_132810

Well now that I have managed to keep my basil from dying for over a month I decided to take some research into how to care for it and there were some really great tips (let’s face it I have already done half of the things wrong, how is the plant still alive?) and thought of sharing them with you, so you can get your own little garden of herbs or start of a garden in the kitchen like I keep it.

Growing basil

  1. There are several different ways of growing basil.
  2. You can buy seeds and plant them into good soil, which is slightly moist.
  3. You can do like me and buy the basil from a store and water it constantly until you realise it is not dying. You might need to replant it, as store bought basil is usually planted too close to each other. The plants need space, so plant them about 10-15cm away from each other.
  4. You can cut off a stem of an existing plant and put it into water until it starts growing roots (what I am doing in the image).
  5. If you have a flower on the basil cut it off, take out the seeds, let them dry and then plant them.

IMG_20160906_132818

What does basil need?

  • Good access to the sun, however, I would not put it under a scorching sun as it will quickly dry it out.
  • Well-drained soil
  • Watering every morning, as basil doesn’t like to be soaked in water overnight.
  • Pinching. If you want the bushy type basil, you pinch the leafs of the top of the plant and not off the bottom. (I though to take some off the bottom, as they were not looking great, but it just grew in length and it is so tall right now!!)
  • If the flowers grow, cut them off with additional two leaves from under it. The flower alters the hormonal balance of the plant and changes its flavour.
  • If you notice mold on the plant it’s not getting enough sunlight or it is planted too close to each other.

IMG_20160906_132841

At the moment I am drying off the flower to get some seeds and, as you can see from the images above, I have placed some stems in the water. It is quite exciting experimenting with it!

I hope you will try to grow your own basil, and please let me know if you will and how it goes! If you manage to grow your own basil do share them with me on Instagram or twitter!

With love,

Lii

What have I been up to in August

This summer has been truly very busy for me and while I am quite excited to get more me time in September I have really enjoyed all that has happened in August. It was a warm month with a lot of work, friends, getting back to my daily routine. There has been a lot of laughter while I have been able to take some down time every now and then to relax and gather my thoughts. After being a bit stressed for a couple of days about the starting Autumn I have finally made some plans that will ground me down and keep my routine and make me happy about the future, more about soon!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Looking back what I have been talking about on my blog in August it seems that I have been travelling my fair share and wrote about it in August. My travels have taken me on a road trip with friends around the beautiful and tranquil Scottish Highlands. I should go back there anytime I need to get out of the city! I have enjoyed a couple of little trips to beautiful old towns of Vianden and Metz where I have been totally amazed by their castles and cathedrals, and I have spent some time roaming around the Luxembourg city with my family. Living away from my family makes me treasure the times when I see them!

My own research into sustainability has found me new information on the problems of sustainability in the fashion industry which I discuss in Overdressed and True Cost. In addition, I found two online brands which are amazingly innovative with the sustainability. The Post-Couture Collective, which has innovated a new way to create fashion and Buy Me Once, which promotes a new way of shopping for products.

I have been so busy that goals and self-improvement have not really been on my mind. However, I have thought about my social awkwardness a bit, especially in the context of complimenting.

Fionna Fernandes

August has been full of favourites from finding a book on a bus to favourite illustrators, feminist interviews and working in a photo studio. I have truly been fortunate with my happy moments, but then it is all in the attitude. I like my life happy and inspired, so I look around and find it.

How has your August been?

With love,

Lii
