What Was I Up To In August

August was again very busy for me, mostly working and working some more. I am so happy it’s finally September and I have my two little holidays to relax and rewind! I am also more excited about this blog and the direction I am going with it with more sustainable and fashion posts, as apparent from the posts in August (I hope you like it as well) and following the inspiration of new month and new beginnings.

Happy Favourites of the Week - Enjoying the Little Moments - byLiiL

I started posting Sustainable New of the Month, which is just a collection of sustainable articles I’ve found very interesting although there are many more! I shared TED talks about sustainability and talked about Sustainable Fashion terminology. I wrote reviews on Before the Flood and Chasing Coral documentaries, which I do recommend for you to watch. In addition, I wrote opinion pieces questioning whether Big brands are stealing small brand’s thunder and Why do we expect fashion to be cheap.

The FINE Deodorant - byLiiL

Otherwise, my month was slightly better with finally finding amazing natural deodorant and sharing with you the amazing Lush cuticle cream. I’ve also been really enjoying books and my friends’ company, and the little moments in life!

What were you up to in August?

The FINE Deodorant

Like everybody else I was long on the hunt for the natural deodorant that is aluminium and alcohol-free, is not drying and actually works. It sounds like an impossible task and I really felt as though it was! I tried a bunch of them from the high street to ordering one from MADARA, but nothing seemed to tick each box. There were several others online, which nevertheless of the great reviews I was afraid to order due to their higher price and no promise for it working for me. Your armpits, as well as any other part of your skin, can behave in a different way from everybody else and although something might work for your friends and family, doesn’t mean that it will work for you. I thought I had to settle for something that wasn’t exactly working for me but was the best option from everything I had tried until my friend brought me a sample of Fine cream deodorant.

I had never heard of this brand or their deodorants before, but my friend reassured me it was her favourite deodorant brand since she had tried it. I was excited to try the product but quite sceptical whether it would work for me and what a surprise it was! After only a first application I lasted without extra application for at least 2 days. There wasn’t even the slightest scent of odour, my armpits were feeling moisturised, dry and comfortable. Once I finished the sample sachet I knew I had to get the real deal!

The FINE Deodorant - byLiiL

FINE Deodorant is a natural, organic and vegan deodorant designed in Berlin, Germany. Their cream deodorants come in two scents; vetiver geranium and cedar bergamot. I’ve only tried vetiver geranium, which I absolutely loved, but am quite interested in the other scent as well. What for me was the most exciting thing is they are alcohol and aluminium free, how amazing is that! The idea for Fine deodorant came from the need for a natural deodorant that is healthy and it works, and that is exactly what they created. Funnily enough, they share this idea even in the name:

FINE is Italian for “end”. And this is exactly what FINE does: it finally puts an end to undesired odors from sweat that are often paired with feeling uncomfortable. And last but not least it ends your search for a clean and efficient deodorant. FINE also means “great” and “beautiful” in English of course. And that is FINE in one word!

The deodorants come in glass jars with a wooden spatula and they have the original scent in a tube as well if you prefer that. FINE is not tested on animals, it is GMO-free, Nano free, Parabens free, Gluten free, Petrochemical free and it does not include any synthetic preservatives, fragrances or fillers. They list all the ingredients used in their products on their website and even explain about their ingredients, although that is in German.

If you are not familiar with the cream deodorants, they might seem funny as it is actually a cream that you spread into your armpits with your fingers. I use a pea-sized amount, after a shower, that I massage into my armpits and enjoy the wonderful smell of vetiver and geranium that smells clean and invigorating. It dries in an instant and you do not get those white marks on your tops when putting them on!

One of my favourite things about this brand is that they offer sample sachets for you to try their product before committing to the quite heftily priced product (30mg is around €28). If you got interested, and I think you should have as my life completely turned for the better after FINE, you can find their products on their own website, which although is beautiful is not yet quite perfectly developed for the English reading customer (you are still able to order easily, but the terms and conditions are in German). They also have several other shops selling them in Berlin, all around Germany and in several online shops around Europe. In the UK you can find FINE in The Method, an Edinburgh based lifestyle store.

Have you heard of FINE Deodorant before?

Happy Favourites of the Week – Midsummers Night

Fine Deodorant – My friend gave me a sample of this brands vetiver and geranium natural deodorant and it is the best that I have tried! The scent is nice, it lasted me with one application to the next shower (except for a tough and sweaty yoga class but I didn’t expect it to) and the best thing, it is aluminium free! Now I just need to acquire the full sized one, unfortunately, they are pretty pricey.

Wonder Woman – We finally went to see wonder woman to the cinema, after planning for it for about two weeks. I liked the “girl power” message of the movie and how real and awful they made the war seem, although it also made me very sad. This movie made me consider whether I should change blogging about feminism solely! There is a wonder woman in every one of us!

Maisoap Scrub – This is a bunch of lovely soap in an organdie type bag, which when used under water cleans and scrubs gently. I thought the idea was genius although doesn’t provide a harsh scrub, just a gentle one. The company and product information are in German and this is not one of their usual products, so I am not sure if it is supposed to be a scrub or just a way of using all the rest of the soap bits, but still genius!

Earth 911 – I stumbled onto this website when I was researching the recycling of disposable straws and I can’t believe I never knew about it! It is a website where you can enter the item that you want to recycle and where you live and it will tell you whether it can be recycled and where! (and learned that where I live I cannot recycle disposable straws) In addition, it has a lot of tips for sustainable living and information on the development within sustainability with articles and videos.

Midsummer night fun with friends – Midsummer night does not seem to be a big thing in the UK or the USA, but it is big in the Nordic countries. So to keep up with the traditions we came together with some of our friends, made way too much food and had fun drinking and playing trivia. I came up with a new potato salad recipe, which was delicious! And thankfully all the food was consumed in the following days, so there was no waste. It was a fun night full of laughter and we stayed up way too late so waking up the next morning was a challenge, but definitely worth it!

The Heart Goes Last – After reading a book that I had been waiting for ages to read and realising that it wasn’t quite as interesting to me I decided next to read something that I know I’ll enjoy. Well, when reading Margaret Atwood enjoy is not the right word, being intrigued, inspired and shaken would be closer to the truth. I have not finished this book yet, but can’t seem to be able to put the book down.

Dharma and Greg – This late 90s early 00s show is one of my favourites to watch again and again and every time I seem to get something new out of it. This time I am so inspired by how open and herself Dharma is and how she is not afraid to be a complete opposite from her husband and the in-laws and stays true to herself. The show introduces sustainability, oppression and what would be called weird to the Western culture, although in a comical way.

Laugh of the week – It was a cold and wet day (yes I know it is June) and I was walking home, thankfully during a break in the rain showers. A woman was hurrying towards my direction with her daughter. Suddenly the little girl saw a small puddle, decided to stop and started playing with her white and shiny little pony in it. The mother had walked way past me when she noticed that her daughter wasn’t next to her and started shouting something. But the joy in the little girl’s eyes when she got to play in that puddle reminded me of my childhood. It definitely put a smile on my face for the rest of the day!
