“Locker room talk” Says who? – Alexis Jones talks about why the locker room talk, where men objectify women, is not okay. She talks about how the whole society needs to provide men with the right example of how to treat women and think for themselves, rather than learn this from very disturbing media and porn.

Everyday Sexism – Explains how women and men are really equal now, but how deep the sexism still exists. This talk inspires and empowers you to act towards the equality and fight against people who keep being sexists.

We should all be feminists – Discussed from a point of view from Nigeria by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This is a well-rounded and at times funny discussion about the problems women and girls face in Nigeria, how we educate our children and what the word feminist means.

Sexism in Gaming – Just as the topic says this video is about sexism happening in gaming. Now you might not be into gaming, but there is a big misrepresentation of how many women and girls are. This talk is about why games should not be sexists as well as why they should be promoted and created equally for all genders.

Violence against women – it’s a men’s issue – Jackson Katz talks about the problem in leadership and how that affects the rest of us. Inspiration of the Month – OneSqin

There are times when the inspiration comes from the weirdest places. This time I was scrolling through the Kickstarter page looking if there is anything interesting there. And in the midst of all the other projects, I found the OneSqin project which moved me and made me really want to backup their project. Let me tell you a little bit about it!

Inspiration of the Month - OneSqin - byLiiL

OneSqin is not a charity, but as they say, rather “a business that channels purchasing power towards social change”.

“The first health and beauty brand donating 100% of profits to provide life changing education for girls in need”

This project, or rather a business, is about empowering girls who live in poverty. The company sells organic tampons, organic t-shirts and 100% natural al purpose skin cream, and with the profits they help the girls. All their products are sustainably produced, carefully researched and cruelty-free.

Buying from OneSqin you provide the girls in poverty with a chance to stay in school, access health services and delay marriage and childbirth. This will assist the girls to grow up into independent women, who can support their families and their local community and build a future away from poverty.

As you probably realised this is a Kickstarter project that can be backed up until 8th of June. So plenty of time to put your money into something great! There are a lot of options to choose from, which can reward you as well as the company and the girls. The Kickstarter is to help the business launch and to see what else they have in mind. So go back them up, I sure will!

What is inspiring you this month?

I Am Thankful

For this year I set myself a goal to read 24 books, 2 per month. Somehow, in February, I managed to read 5 most of which have made me really thankful for being me and being in the position and culture that I am living in. I don’t know about the rest of you but I often take for granted the life I have, and the privileges I have (eating what I want, walking out alone without being harassed, the internet and reading books) without understanding how it is that I got these privileges. It shocks me when I read that some people do not have these privileges or are not allowed to have them. And yes, I find them privileges to us if it is not available to every person on the planet.

I am so used to these things that when I finally found zucchinis after a month of craving them when they were unavailable in shops due to the ‘vegetable crisis’, I was so happy to have them and couldn’t believe that they had been unavailable for so long. I got surprised and ashamed at my thoughts. How did I dare to think that way when for some people this is a reality?

I am thankful - byLiiL

When we are used to getting something it becomes a norm for us, and we get mad/annoyed/frustrated when we don’t get it anymore rather than thankful that we do get it. So in light of this, I want to share what I am thankful for and hope that you share your thankfulness in the comment section.

  • I am thankful to have a healthy enough body to be able to do sports, to be able to take care of myself and others, to be able to be independent in my daily life and to be able to do my crafts.
  • I am thankful for all the feminists who fought for women’s and equal rights so that now I have the possibility to be educated, choose my career, be independent of men and earn my own living.
  • I am thankful to live in a country where I can buy and make almost whatever food I like, whatever clothes and other items I like, where healthcare is important and free for all people, where education is free and where I am free to be of any religion I want.
  • I am thankful for my friends and family who have supported me and brought joy and sanity into my life.
  • I am thankful for this planet for providing us oxygen that we breathe, beauty in plants, animals and scenery and offering us resources for living.

I hope I will enjoy all of this, many years to come!

What are you thankful for?

Stay Strong Be Empowered

This year has not been easy. And I do not mean it has not been easy for me, but for our world. With each incident I seem to have less and less hope for the human kind and today when I heard the news, I wasn’t even surprised. Horrified, but not surprised. I thought of the furthest point I could move away from all this craziness, racism, selfishness and  narrow mindedness. Too bad Moon is not occupiable just yet.

Stay Strong Be Empowered - byLiiL

Of course, running away is not the answer, no matter how appealing it might sometimes feel. Now we just need to fight harder with educating ourselves to be more knowledgeable, understanding more, being more compassionate and being better. This year has already been one big learning experience.

There was a time when I didn’t think voting mattered, that I had any power over anything. But now I know, that if I do not vote then that voice is lost. And by ‘voting’ I do not only mean in elections, I also mean your choices, your behaviour and your consumption. This might sound funny, but every time you make a decision it is as if you are casting a vote towards that ‘meaning’. When you behave gracefully and do not laugh at a person who just fell in front of you, you are casting a vote to a more compassionate society that does not make fun of people. When you buy local produce, you are casting a vote to help out your local farmers against the big corporations.

Stay Strong Be Empowered - byLiiL

At the moment I am afraid. I am afraid of the climate change and the planet. I am afraid for all the people who are being lied to and will struggle. I am afraid for the selfishness and narrow mindedness. I am afraid for the greed of big corporations and I am afraid of the monetary power they have over our decision makers.

Now I hope there is enough people, the will and power left to protect out planet so that we don’t need to resolve into fleeing away to the Moon.

Inspiration of the Month – free online courses

In September we are used to getting ready to put our thinking hats on and start studying. Some with pleasure and some less eagerly. Ones you graduate into the real working life with no real summer holiday this month feels odd. Like something is missing and your world has turned upside down. Well, mine has at least. I’ve already been a year in the working life and although I enjoy it I envy those who get to start their new year of studying. Of course, for me, it could also be an option if I could find a further study course which I would benefit from and not just waste a year of my life on.

As I do miss studying and the feeling of new knowledge running through me (doesn’t it feel invigorating and empowering?) I started looking elsewhere for small short courses that could be beneficial to me. So I found a couple of websites, from some little birds whisperings, that offer open university or short courses for people. I dived into the mysterious world of their offerings and now I have a two-page list of different courses which intrigue me. I got so excited that I could have spent the whole autumn just studying, but real life calls and I will need to find time for these studies whilst working.

If it wasn’t yet clear the inspiration for this month is the free courses available online. If you are a person who likes to educate themselves about new things or more about their career then this might be for you as well. It made me start thinking again in the old familiar way, which I had almost forgotten. And it made me excited again. I am sure not all of these courses are going to be good, but that is the beauty of it. If you don’t like the course, nobody is forcing you to finish it. You finish what you enjoy!

Future Learn is a website of only free courses. I’ve already finished one, which sounded interesting but was a bit too easy for my taste, but I already started another one which I find intriguing! The courses are from Universities all over the world and you get video and pdf material to study. They quiz you and you get to discuss things with other who are on the particular course. There are so many subjects from fashion and food industry to climate change, so it will be a surprise if you would not find something you like.

Coursera is another website, although slightly different from Future Learn. Coursera offers courses from top Universities over the world and the difference is that they offer many courses which you have to pay for, but to many of them, there are options to just go through the course without getting the certificate, for which you would pay for. I found these courses a bit more demanding, but in a good way. Again, there is such a big array of different courses that you are spoilt for options.

I am sure there are many other websites that offer free courses to study, to understand the world or your career path better, to gain new skills. The best thing is that you can study when it is convenient to you! At the moment I am doing courses on graphic design and modern cultures. Why? Because I can, I enjoy and it really inspires me! Sometimes you don’t have to study and research only your area of career if you widen your worldview you might find new ways to do things and to inspire you. Or you might find things that are relevant to you like leadership skills, management or coding!

Who has tried a free online course? How did you like it?
