The Green Eco Box – Subscription Box That Does Good

(Suomeksi skrollaa alas)

I was kindly sent a Beauty in the Box* by Green Eco Box to test and enjoy. I am really excited to introduce you to this box as I enjoyed exploring it and I really feel they make a difference!

The Green Eco Box is a company that offers you some wonderful artisan products from around the globe whilst promoting more environmental living and it fights against the big problems in our world today: global warming, deforestation and loss of biodiversity. It is a one of a kind product and service with a small but dedicated team behind it to make it all happen. At the heart of the company is the love for our planet and it’s inhabitants, which can be seen in every aspect the company does from their values and ethos to their products.

The Green Eco Box - Subscription Box That Does Good - byLiiL

The Green Eco Box has two types of boxes on offer the Beauty in the box and Bee happy box. Bee happy box is a monthly subscription box that is full of amazing sounding artisan gourmet foods like jams, biscuits and tees, whereas the Beauty in the box (which I received) is a bimonthly box full of artisan beauty products. What is really amazing is that that Green Eco Box has partnered up with amazing charities, for example for the sale of each box the organisation 1 tree will plant a tree in either Haiti or California and depending on which box you choose they gift 3-5€ to WWF or Greenpeace.

In the box I received: Shower Gel from Creamy Stuff, Shampoo bar from Sauberkunst, Soap from Les Belles de Savon, Bath melt from Autour du Bain, samples of chocolates from Valrhona, Tea from Higher Living and a sheet of seeds, which when planted will grow carrots. The seeds are untreated which is all the better for me and the soil I will plant them into! I can’t wait to try it out and see if I can grow my own carrots. My kitchen garden is growing!!

My Experience

Shower Gel – Creamy Stuff

A pomelo scented shower gel which is not tested on animals and is paraffin, paraben and palm oil free. In addition, it is handmade and vegan.

I like the scent of the shower gel, although it is a bit sweet. The consistency was milky, but little goes a long way and it felt luxurious when showering with it. The only criticism I have for the product is that it is in a plastic bottle and therefore I don’t know if I can recycle it here. I have since learned the packaging was made out of recycled plastic and is BPA free, which is excellent!

Shampoo bar – Sauberkunst

A mango lassi scented shampoo bar that is cruelty-free approved by PETA and handmade with wonderful ingredients that will make sure your hair will only get nourishment and none of the ugly stuff.

This was definitely my favourite product from the box and one that I will probably keep buying as it became one of my favourite shampoos ever! The scent was fairly strong, thankfully I like mangoes. And the first time I used it I had to lather quite a lot to get enough product into my hair, however, it washed my hair wonderfully but still gently, as it doesn’t have any soap in the shampoo. The bar is small and would travel well, but also I have washed my hair several times using it and I don’t think it has diminished at all, so will definitely last me a long time!

Soap – Les Belles de Savon

This is a multifunction ‘soap’ that is suitable for hair, body and face, as well as due to it’s natural and perfume free nature it’s suitable for all different skin types and even for babies. It’s full of wonderful ingredients that will make your skin soft and your hair clean.

I tried this bar on my hair, which it washed well and on my skin which was left soft. The scent is fairly natural, maybe slightly peaty, but not in a bad way. The scent after the shower is wonderfully natural. The actual bar is like a balm and a pleasure to touch and use. This would be a wonderful product to take with you when travelling as you won’t need any other product in the shower with you!

The chocolates were nice and the teas had a wonderful flavour of not being too berry, which is usually what I dislike in teas like this. I especially loved the tea with watermelon as it was flavourful but fresh, yummy!

I loved trying these different products and appreciated the uniqueness of each product and the work Green eco box does. What I also like is that if you liked any of the products you tried or if you missed a product that you would like to try you can buy them from the Green Eco Box eboutique!

I think the box is a unique way to be introduced to new brands you wouldn’t otherwise find and like me fall in love with new products. Each box contains something new and interesting and you know that the money you put into the box goes towards supporting small brands and their craft as well as great charities, which I love! I also like that many of the products were third-party certified which made me trust the work Green Eco Box is doing that much more!

Green Eco Box:illa on kahden tyyppistä boxia tarjolla: Beauty in the box ja Bee happy box.

Sustainable Christmas Present Guide – Experience Edition

It is well known that people like experiences, but rather get to do things they would love to do. I, for example, would love to try paragliding and snorkelling and someday hope to get that experience. Meanwhile to provide your loved ones with a thoughtful gift that can be sustainable as well I compiled a list of things that don’t require wrapping. There should be things for different budgets!

Sustainable Christmas Present Guide - Experience Edition - byLiiL

Charity Donation – There are numerous charity donation present offers on the market especially on Christmas from giving a blanket, plant trees, adopt a wild animal. I am sure there is one for almost every charity there is! I would love all of these and remember getting one of the charity presents from my sister one Christmas. Of course, as a little girl, I always wanted to adopt a wild animal!!

Name A Star – There are such numerous amounts of stars in the sky so why not name one after your loved one as their present. I could see this as the perfect present for babies especially, but why not for everybody who loves astrology as well!

Lessons or a course – You all know that I am all up for a course to educate myself further on a variety of topics, but I am sure I am not the only one. The lessons can be from open universities, but could also be a cooking class, knitting or sewing classes, yoga classes or a teacher training course, you name it there is probably a class or a course for it!

Sustainable Christmas Present Guide - Experience Edition - byLiiL

Passes and Memberships – Your loved one might have eyed that certain membership for ages and not dared to spend money on it. Gym memberships, Zoo or museum passes, yearly cinema tickets.

Tickets to Events – Concert and theatre tickets will always be a wanted gift! But different exhibitions, movies even circus could be a fun addition as well!

Trip – Travelling isn’t always sustainable, but I believe it nourishes your sole so as long as you do it sustainably then I think this is a great present! Sometimes little trips locally can be as good as the ones done abroad!

Sustainable Christmas Present Guide - Experience Edition - byLiiL

A service they need – Sometimes there are things that your loved ones cannot do any longer or are fed up doing, but don’t want to use money on it. You could offer the service done by yourself or buy it for them, such as cleaning service which I am sure nobody would refuse!

Experiences – Dinner with a loved one, skydiving, paragliding, snorkelling, diving, hiking or there is a bunch of fun and sustainable activities such as Hunt for Northern Lights or Whale gazing. Some people might need something more relaxing such as Spa weekend or even just a massage appointment.

Your time – In the end what most people want is time with you. We are all very busy and often forget that all of our relationships require time and affection, so remember to offer your time to your loved ones in any way you can whether it is face to face, in a dark movie theatre or through skype call.

Sustainability Causes And How To Support Sustainability

I got recently asked to share and write about what causes I care about and why, and I thought it was an interesting idea which I don’t know why I haven’t written about before. I hope it is obvious from my blog that I care deeply about sustainability, how to make my lifestyle more ethically sustainable and how to inspire others along the road.

Sustainability in itself incorporates a broad spectrum of different causes; there is no one cause that could handle all that is happening around the globe from climate change, to ocean pollution, animal abuse and inhumane working conditions. I do think all of this is part of the sustainable framework. Causes that fall under sustainability are so numerous it can be difficult to pinpoint which is a good place to start. According to “Before the Flood” documentary the biggest polluters on our planet that are driving the climate change are burning fossil fuels, deforestation and agriculture, on the other end numerous reports are sharing that ocean pollution is killing the marine ecosystems.

Before The Flood Documentary And Review - byLiiL

DOCUMENTARIES TO UNDERSTAND SUSTAINABILITY

To help understand what needs help there are several documentaries that also spread awareness and if you haven’t seen them then I definitely recommend them!

  • Before the Flood – Climate change, how it is affecting our planet and what can be done to prevent further temperature rise.
  • Racing Extinction – Animal extinction, what is affecting it and a little bit about how it can be reversed.
  • Chasing Coral – Although this concentrates mainly on coral reefs it addresses how climate change is affecting our oceans and what will happen if it continues at the current rate.
  • Plastic Ocean – (I haven’t seen this yet, but it is on my watchlist) About the plastic pollution and how it affects our oceans.
  • The True Cost – How fashion industry has an effect on climate change, environmental erosion and inhumane labour conditions.

CHARITIES AND CAUSES TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABILITY

Here are some of the causes that I am inclined to support, spread a word around and follow.

  • Marine Conservation Society – A UK based marine conservation society that concentrates working towards healthy, pollution free and sustainable seas.
  • Conservation International – Is a US-based international conservation programme: “Our long-term goal is to safeguard the world’s essential ocean and coastal biodiversity and most productive ecosystems in order to maximize the long-term ecological, social and economic benefits for people and nature.”
  • Oceana – In an international advocacy organisation that is focused on ocean conservation. Their vision is to win over policy victories with countries that are leaders in marine life governing.
  • RSPB – Bird and other wildlife conservation, mostly based in the UK.
  • Soil Association – Soil Association is a charity and an organic certification based in the UK. It works towards providing sustainability by providing a good framework for organic farming in food, textiles and beauty items, and providing those small businesses with support towards making their organic business work.
  • Labour Behind the Label – An organisation concentrated on changing the way garment industry workers are treated across the globe, especially in areas that make most of our clothing. They campaign for change, spread the message to customers who in return can push further, lobby with legislation makers and put pressure the companies that still allow this. Making employees working spaces safer can transfer the number of toxic chemicals used in making garments.
  • Rainforest Action Network – Is a US-based but internationally working organisation working on preserving forests around the globe, protecting the climate and uphold human rights.
  • Trees For Cities – Is a UK-based charity working on planting trees in the UK and internationally into urban areas to clean the air, revitalising areas and improving people’s lives.

There are many other charities and projects that could use help and these were just a few that I felt I wanted to mention.

Sustainability Causes And How To Support Sustainability - byLiiL

In addition, I really want to mention two businesses that I am very impressed about. Ecosia is a search engine, which in reality is an extension to google, but it generates ads money to the company which they use to plant trees around the world! And Done Good is a browser extension, which can be used while googling or browsing websites. If there is an ethical alternative to the items you are looking at it will provide a pop-up alert on the side of the browser to let you know about it. In addition, it alerts you if the company supports the current US president or sells any of his products. Both of these extensions are free to download and use, but the Done Good is currently only available in the US and Canada.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

I think when it comes to sustainability and protecting our planet we should start with our own actions; stop using single-use plastic, stop littering, using more renewable energy, recycling. That is already a great start and many people don’t need to do more. But if you are passionate and want to commit to making our planet better not only for us but for the next generations to come there are additional things that you can do:

  • Spread the word about the issues and how to overcome them.
  • Support causes that you find important in fighting the climate change and other global or local problems.
  • Donate money to a charity or organisation that is working on these issues.
  • Donate your time by organising fundraising events, documentary viewings, information sessions or even just gather within your local area to discuss how you can make a difference there. Eventbrite is offering a discount to non-profit and fundraising groups who organise their ticketing and registration through their website. It is a great resource to have!

Just writing this post got me excited to help out with ocean conservation and thinking about whether I should organise an event as well to spread the word or even have a documentary screening in my local area!

What causes do you support? Share them in the comment box below, I would love to hear about them!

With love,

Lii

Inspiration of the Month – OneSqin

There are times when the inspiration comes from the weirdest places. This time I was scrolling through the Kickstarter page looking if there is anything interesting there. And in the midst of all the other projects, I found the OneSqin project which moved me and made me really want to backup their project. Let me tell you a little bit about it!

Inspiration of the Month - OneSqin - byLiiL

OneSqin is not a charity, but as they say, rather “a business that channels purchasing power towards social change”.

“The first health and beauty brand donating 100% of profits to provide life changing education for girls in need”

This project, or rather a business, is about empowering girls who live in poverty. The company sells organic tampons, organic t-shirts and 100% natural al purpose skin cream, and with the profits they help the girls. All their products are sustainably produced, carefully researched and cruelty-free.

Buying from OneSqin you provide the girls in poverty with a chance to stay in school, access health services and delay marriage and childbirth. This will assist the girls to grow up into independent women, who can support their families and their local community and build a future away from poverty.

Inspiration of the Month - OneSqin - byLiiL

As you probably realised this is a Kickstarter project that can be backed up until 8th of June. So plenty of time to put your money into something great! There are a lot of options to choose from, which can reward you as well as the company and the girls. The Kickstarter is to help the business launch and to see what else they have in mind. So go back them up, I sure will!

Pics are from the OneSqin Kickstarter page.

What is inspiring you this month?

With love,

Lii

Happy Favourites of the Week – Ice skating and Persepolis

Charity woman – I’ve seen this one woman on the streets this week several times and each time she is speaking with a different homeless person making sure they are fine, enquiring into their lives and generally caring. It is lovely!!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Ice skating and persepolis - byLiiL

Ice skating – I used to do ice skating all the time when I was younger, but as I reached my teens it wasn’t so interesting anymore. Now 10 years later I came back to my love and can only be shocked at how well I have forgotten everything I knew. It is still joy to go ice skating again and I left the rink on the happy cloud!

Put money on ethical – After reading the Fossil Fuel Divestment post by Ethical Unicorn I got interested in putting money on ethical. I don’t mean by this just buying more ethical stuff, but actually starting to use a bank that is transparent and that invests in ethical companies. It is amazing what we can learn about being more ethical every day! Empowering really! Check out this post by Ethical Unicorn as well!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Ice skating and persepolis - byLiiL

Bullet Journal – I didn’t think I would want to do a bullet journal, but I wanted to somehow record my yoga training so I started filling one for it and I have to admit I enjoy it. It has helped me to keep motivated and learn from what I do!

Persepolis – This graphic book/autobiography was excellent! It was interesting, eye opening and it definitely changed the way I view many things in the world now. I loved the way it was written and drawn. Although, the topic is depressing Satrapi made me laugh more than once. I recommend this to everybody!

How has your week been?

With love,

Lii

Happy favourites of the week – cuddly cats

What made me happy and were my favourite things this week.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Your response to the Lush hair products -post and the zero-waste one! I was so happy to have so many comments from you guys!

Listening to the new album by Corinne Bailey Rae ‘The Heart Speaks In Whispers’. I am in love! I could just keep listening to this album over and over again! It is kind of blues with lovely melody, voice and lyrics. It makes you relaxed and to enjoy life at the same time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This youtube video! It is by Amber Danielle Walter and it was the first video I’ve seen from her. She talks with such enthusiasm about helping other people and how it makes her feel so good, it really was inspiring and heartwarming. I encourage to have a look!

My beautiful pastel roses, I got from my boyfriend, have been cheering me up throughout the week!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My lovely cat who has been extra cuddly and attention seeking this week. Here I was trying to take pictures, but she decided it was her time (btw she usually doesn’t like being in front of the camera). She is really into roses, though, apparently, cute!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I read about this amazing invention! Edible beer rings! And before you think it is food made out of beer, wait a second. If you have watched HIMYM or just generally read the news.. or facebook, you are most likely familiar with the plastic beer rings in which beer cans come in. These most often end up in the sea and pollute the marine water and harm the marine life. But now Saltwater brewery has come up with beer rings, that are edible by the marine life, they are biodegradable and so can’t harm the marine life. How amazing is that! I think all beer companies should take this policy, right now!! Read more about it here.

What made you happy this week?

Happy Weekend everybody!!
