Happy Favourites of October 2018

Tiger – October has flown by so quickly I didn’t even realise it started. This is largely due to one reason – Tiger. If you follow me on Instagram you already know that at the beginning of the month I got a small addition to my family in the form of our ginger kitten Tiger. He is the cutest, the friendliest, the liveliest, the craziest and the hungriest little creature, who is making us smile every day and has us sleep deprived ( who would’ve thought …). He loves to sleep in any human lap and if you put him down he either crawls back into your lap or starts running around like crazy. Also, he has a lovely loud purr that relaxes everybody. It is very difficult to leave the house with such cuteness in it!

Friends’ Wedding – My friends got married in the beginning of October and I was lucky to witness their beautiful ceremony and fun party. It was definitely a day of love and merriness and left everybody feeling happy.

Taking care of Cats – And following the wedding me and my fiance got to take care of their cats. We luckily live close to them and therefore were able to spend every day a bit of time with the wonderful felines. Meeting new animals and winning their trust is quite a wonderful experience!

Circular Economy Hotspot Conference – I got an opportunity to attend the Circular Economy Hotspot conference held in Glasgow and I was so impressed with how motivated everybody was to make our planet a better place. I got to hear a talk from Scottish First Minister about their plans for Circular Scotland, from organisations working on circular Glasgow and what the chair of United Nations Environmental Protection is planning. I also learned why recycling plastic is problematic at the moment and what innovations there are to replace plastic in Scotland. I am really impressed with all the companies collaborating to make Scottish businesses more circular! Overall the experience was amazing and really inspiring!

Watch

Fashion’s Dirty Secret – Talks, investigates and reveals some of the secrets fashion industry has and how they impact the planet. Everybody should see it to understand the enormity of the problem! I was surprised that people didn’t know there is a problem with the fashion industry. However, not so surprised to see the big brands refusing to even talk about these issues nevertheless of talking sustainability at Copenhagen Fashion Summit. Makes me a bit scared for leaving a big amount of sustainability into their hands. Watch this (available on BBC iPlayer) and then send an email to your local governmental representative requesting legislation to keep our planet safe!

Emma Watson Interviews Reni Eddo-Lodge – Emma interviews the author of “Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race”. They discuss feminism and race and how why these topics are still important in our today’s society.

The Ivory Game – A documentary on Netflix telling why and how the elephants are in danger of dying of our planet. It is devastating but also very informative.

I Tonya – I watched it because of figure skating, however, there was very little figure skating in the movie. Instead, it showed how pr and branding orientated the United States is (or was I am not sure) to the point that they will not send the best athlete to the world podiums just because of their image. And how they put down the people with a bad image. It was sad and showed the problems of the poor, different and women.

Support

Bristol Cloth Crowdfunder -“What’s missing from the UK is a locally-sourced and manufactured cloth for designers to work with, and we’re setting out to change this by creating the Bristol Cloth: A sustainable, bioregional material that regenerates rather than degrades our land and natural resources.” Sounds great, doesn’t it!

Right to Repair – It is time that technology companies would let us repair our devices to lengthen their lifecycle, instead of having to buy a new one all of the time.

Happy Favourites of August 2018

Visit to the Purple Cat Cafe – Purple cat cafe is the first cat cafe in Glasgow and it is an experience worth going to… especially if you like cats. To get in you should book a time slot, as they book full really quickly, we were lucky that we got the last spot left right at the time when we showed up. Although they serve food and drinks which are tasty and offer vegetarian as well as vegan options, the main attraction there is, of course, the cats, which there is around a dozen. All the cats are friendly although don’t always want people touching them, however, if you offer them a treat they just might pay more attention to you. What I really enjoyed about the experience though was the atmosphere. I felt relaxed looking at what the cats were up to. Climbing their trees as they were able to go all around the cafe including nearly the ceiling where they had a shelf and a little nook to sleep in. We got a spot next to a sleeping fur baby, who didn’t wake up to anything but looked like an angel whilst sleeping, until it was time for the treats to which he woke in a second and happily came to collect his treats. I definitely recommend visiting this place and spending some quality time watching the feline’s life.

European Championship 2018 in Glasgow – I really wanted to go and see one of the events, but didn’t really have time for it, however, on one Saturday whilst being out and about in the city centre I realised the cycling was on. It was at the same time exciting as it was a bit annoying. Half of the city was fenced and to get to the other side of the road, which usually took you less than a minute, now took you around a couple of blocks and then through the very crowded little passing spot. However, this is not a usual occurrence in Glasgow, so I decided to enjoy the exciting atmosphere of the city and clapped alongside to encourage the cyclists. Funnily enough, two German cyclers had time to chat with each other while doing the race.

Local Heroes – Made In Glasgow – An amazing showcase of design in Glasgow that was up for the duration of the European Championships. We got gifted a limited edition print by Emer Tumilty and saw some great new designers who I hadn’t even heard about. Scotland is truly full of great and innovative designers!

Trying Out Malaysian Food – I’ve never before tried Malaysian food but when my friend came back from her holiday and suggested a dinner to catch up a restaurant close by came to my mind and we decided to catch up there. The food was very tasty, although mine was so spicy I don’t remember ever eating as spicy food, except that one time when we cooked with singapore spice set and put too much of it into our food. Unfortunately, the restaurant was trying to be too fancy that we felt being pestered by the waiters too much and the atmosphere a bit pretentious. Nevertheless, the evening with friends was lovely and a breath of fresh air!

New Plants – If I see a plant that I fall in love with it I have to get it. So in August, I added two new plants to the collection: a cute new succulent and a gorgeous Calathea. I really need more space for plants in my house though!

Green Eco Box – That I received in August was truly a joy and I loved getting to know the company well and the beautiful products! If you want to read more about it check it here.

Bear and the Nightingale – I just finished this beautiful, magical book that questioned the relationship between church and old beliefs, and a woman’s place in a man’s world. I loved it!!

Void – The only thing I went to see during the Edinburgh Fringe was a show called Void which was essentially a dance performance showing a woman who was due to a highway accident been thrown into an area not suitable for people and from where it doesn’t seem that she could get away. The performance was very moving and I especially liked the performer, Mele Broomes, who was brilliant. The whole thing worked together well and left me moved and thinking.

My Ninja – The cat in the pictures who likes attention so much that she decided as soon as I started to take pictures that she needs to be in them.

Happy Favourites of the Week – Spring Time

Visiting Friends – We had a fun night with friends playing Cards Against Humanity with visiting friends. We hadn’t had laughs quite as good in a long time! It was an absolutely fun night!

Easter Weekend – Although, I was working on a couple of the days during the Easter break it was still amazingly relaxing weekend full of delicious food and chocolate.

New Deodorant – I absolutely love my deodorant from Fine, but with its price tag I am happy that I’ve found another one, closer to home that has a much better price tag for my wallet! Evolve beauty have recently come out with a deodorant which is lovely! It is moisturising and doesn’t have a strong scent, in addition, it actually works and it’s made out of all natural ingredients. What more could you want! I do warn though, it has bicarbonate of soda. I wasn’t sure if my armpits could handle it and that is why I haven’t tried most natural deodorants in the UK, but Evolve also have small sample packs which helps you try whether it is suitable for you!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Spring Time - byLiiL

Spring Flowers – Spring brings spring flowers and oh how I love looking at them and smelling them, it is just such a delight! Having fresh tulips in the house lifts your mood like nothing else! I can’t wait until mongolia and cherry trees start to flower in front of our house. I’ve seen them flowering elsewhere, but I live slightly higher up and it comes later here.

A Lifecycle of a T-shirt – This little Ted-ed clip was great at explaining the process a garment goes through and how it pollutes the world. Although, I would’ve loved if they added how sustainable fashion is different to show a comparison! Still, the clip is very informative and interesting, especially for people who do not work in the fashion industry.

I finally finished Women Who Run With The Wolves – It felt like a process going through this book. It is not an easy read, but then again it is not supposed to be. It is a book full of ancient women’s wisdom for empowering women to be themselves and understand the psychological cycles they go through at different times of their life. It taught me a lot and I really recommend everybody to read it!

Cat’s New Scratching Post – Actually it is their first proper scratching post. I wanted them to stop scratching our couch! So I finally got a small scratching post with a little toy in it and two places to sit and it is slowly gaining acceptance with the cats. One of them loves to scratch it and the other one loves another spot for him to sit and stare at us from.

Are Cats Affectioned?

I can’t remember how many times I’ve heard people say that they can’t see how owners can be attached to their cats, how cats are not affectioned animals, that cats are solitary animals and do not like to have company whether it is people or other animals. This makes me sad. People have so many misconceptions of cats and although this might be true with some cats most are far from it. When comparing cats to dogs, I find it takes much longer to get affectioned with a cat than a dog, but they can be as loving they just have a different way to show it. So for those of you who don’t understand cats and also for those of you who do, I will tell you about my two lovely furry balls.

Are cat's affectioned - byLiiL

I have two cats. An older one Nuppu, who is a boy, and a younger one Ninja, who is a girl. Nuppu is like a baby to me. He likes to be carried when he is tired, although does not like to sit in the lap. He always makes sure he can be in the same room with one of us, never mind which room it is. Bathrooms are a must, he doesn’t seem to understand that bathroom is usually a solitary environment, and our guests are usually quite surprised when they get him as a companion in the bathroom. He also makes sure that nobody is left alone in a room. In the mornings when

He also makes sure that nobody is left alone in a room. In the mornings when I and Ninja are left to sleep, but my boyfriend gets up Nuppu makes sure to get up with him only to go back to sleep in the other room.

Nuppu always greets us when we come home and likes to inspect any shopping we have done by sniffing each and every item (I like to think he is inspecting whether they are good enough for us to eat, but most likely he is just looking for something for him to eat).

Ninja behaves a bit more like a conventional cat. She doesn’t like to be carried and does often enjoy her own space, especially if we have guests over. Then again, she loves to sleep in our lap whenever it is cold and she usually sleeps on one of us during the night. She longs for attention and loves to be petted, and she will show you when she wants this, sometimes by a slightly snappy ‘miau’. Her favourite thing is to be brushed and it doesn’t matter who is holding the brush she will be that person’s best friend! Whenever I am taking pictures for the blog or anything else really, Ninja loves to be involved and will sniff items that I am taking pictures of and the camera.

Are cat's affectioned - byLiiL

Whenever we have been on a holiday out cars react by being overly affectioned and looking for attention by sitting on us, following us from one room to another and purring extra loud when we are all sitting on the couch. If only I or my boyfriend is away they keep searching for the other person by walking aimlessly from one room to another looking from under couches, blankets, tables, as though one of us was hiding somewhere.

So believe me, I feel how affectioned my cats are and whenever I am away from home I feel bad because I’ve seen how they keep searching for me. They are like my two babies!

Do you have cats? And have you met a cat who is affectioned?

With love,

Lii

Illustration faves

I am a very visual person. I love colour, I love looking at a great scenery and I love art. Illustrators are one of my favourite things to follow on Instagram and I am always finding new people who to follow and who’s art to awe at. There are some who make my heart jump up a beat, that makes me happy, makes me crave to look at that piece forever. I would love to have a gallery wall of my favourite illustrations, and someday I probably will. But for now, I wanted to share a couple of my favourite ones.

Klaus Haapaniemi

Klaus Haapaniemi

A Finnish illustrator who I stumbled upon ages ago. He is most known probably for his illustrations on dishes but does so much more. I love his detail in the imaging and the use of colour. His illustrations remind me of russian folklore and I love the animals and especially cats in his illustrations. I have been dreaming of a dish set that is illustrated by him and I am completely obsessed with his Instagram account and so sorry for myself when I see all the products they only release in Japan!

Laura Laine

Laura Laine

Another Finnish illustrator, Laura Laine has a wide portfolio of illustrations done for fashion companies. Her style is very unique and I recognise it most often by the amazing hair. It is not as colourful but still very detailed and interesting. She combines animals and florals in her illustrations so cleverly. Check out more of her work here.

Fionna Fernandes

Fionna Fernandes

Is an Australian illustrator with amazing colourful graphic illustrations. The amount and combination of colour is so wonderful and taking inspiration from common things as well as children’s toys, her illustrations are happy and cheerful. Her Instagram account is so cheerful it’s like a pop of happy mood for your day!

Do you know any other illustrators who I might love?

Happy favourites of the week – cuddly cats

What made me happy and were my favourite things this week.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Your response to the Lush hair products -post and the zero-waste one! I was so happy to have so many comments from you guys!

Listening to the new album by Corinne Bailey Rae ‘The Heart Speaks In Whispers’. I am in love! I could just keep listening to this album over and over again! It is kind of blues with lovely melody, voice and lyrics. It makes you relaxed and to enjoy life at the same time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This youtube video! It is by Amber Danielle Walter and it was the first video I’ve seen from her. She talks with such enthusiasm about helping other people and how it makes her feel so good, it really was inspiring and heartwarming. I encourage to have a look!

My beautiful pastel roses, I got from my boyfriend, have been cheering me up throughout the week!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My lovely cat who has been extra cuddly and attention seeking this week. Here I was trying to take pictures, but she decided it was her time (btw she usually doesn’t like being in front of the camera). She is really into roses, though, apparently, cute!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I read about this amazing invention! Edible beer rings! And before you think it is food made out of beer, wait a second. If you have watched HIMYM or just generally read the news.. or facebook, you are most likely familiar with the plastic beer rings in which beer cans come in. These most often end up in the sea and pollute the marine water and harm the marine life. But now Saltwater brewery has come up with beer rings, that are edible by the marine life, they are biodegradable and so can’t harm the marine life. How amazing is that! I think all beer companies should take this policy, right now!! Read more about it here.
