15 things I am dreaming about just now – February edition

Warm and light spring days with long walks outside!

To get rid of the cactus in my throat.

Quick reading abilities. I have so many books to read and I am anxious to get through them.

Going to a sauna. The hot moist air that purifies the skin and the body of all toxins! (one of the only things I miss from Finland)

A comfier couch. Ours is a poor resemblance of a couch which makes my back ache and it’s not actually comfy to sit on.

To not have to read any more upsetting news, at the same time I am so thankful to be able to know what is going around the world.

Uncorrupt media and world governments…

A really good tiramisu. I rarely want one, but for the past couple of weeks I’ve been looking out for the one, I would like to have.

Dreams of a Dining space

In our flat, we do not have a dining table. I eat breakfast and lunch at my desk and when we are eating dinner it is done on the couch watching tv or on occasion (when we have guests or it’s Christmas) we pull out my other work desk that we set for the dinner. Often, after work, I do enjoy watching a tv-show which distracts me from what has been going on during the day, however, often I also find it paralyses me on to the couch and I get frustrated easily.

This is why when researching about healthy eating habits, I was not surprised to learn, that sitting at a table with your family or friends, without distractions such as TV, can be beneficial for your health. When you concentrate on what you eat you are more mindful about it and when you converse with somebody it makes you eat slower and you feel full quicker, thus you will not overeat. In addition, to me, sitting at a table and having to get up from it after dinner gives new energy to work on something else, rather than be stuck with a TV-show. Funnily enough, we often want to go out for a meal, because then we know that we will have a meaningful conversation.

So recently I started dreaming of a dining area. I know there is no room in our current flat, but the more reason I can dream of one for our future flat and meanwhile try to dine without the TV on (wish me luck). I collected here some ideas of the dining area that I would enjoy eating at. Obviously, I would like to make the area sustainable, so a lot of items from recycled or otherwise sustainable sources. First things that come to mind are; foliage, thick repurposed wooden tables, comfy chairs, beautiful place mats and coasters to protect the table and copperware, which is supposed to have antibacterial properties (read more about it here).

  • The ball lamps in picture 2 are just wonderful and made out of upcycled capiz shells, which are in abundance in Indonesia. I absolutely adore them. You can read more about the recycling method and find the lamp here.
  • The beautiful geometric acrylic lamp in picture 6 is made from recycled materials and I love the shading it gives on the walls. You can find the lamp here with the information about how it was made.
  • The copper table in picture 7 is so interesting. I know I said I would love a repurposed wood table, but that would be my option two. Don’t you just love the colours? The table is made by Arhaus and recycled as well. You can find more similar tables here.
  • Pictures 8 and 13 are visual of other items from Arhaus. I love that such a big company has built their success on making sustainable furniture (read more about it here). More companies should do that!
  • The lamp in picture 12 is made out of recycled plastic bottles. Only on closer inspection did I notice that and thought how cool the idea was! Check it out here.
  • Picture 15, although, over saturated, is close to the ideal dining space. Maybe a bit too much foliage, but everybody needs a lot of oxygen!
  • If you want to see more recycled furniture ideas check these four small shops 1, 2, 3 and 4, or if you liked the Arhaus check their dining room set here.
  • The rest of the pictures are from Pinterest and can be found on this board.

Do you dine at a family table or do you watch tv on the couch instead?

4 Posts that make you think

You can’t buy your way to a better world – Interesting point of view. Makes a good point of how just changing what you buy is not enough, but it is the whole principle of fast-consumerism that needs to change.

The Future of Cities – This is actually a short youtube documentary/movie, which tells you in short how people are innovating better cities for our future.

Top Tips to Ditch Fast-Fashion – If you have already decided that you want to stop buying fast-fashion and don’t know how to check this out. If you don’t know why you should do it check it out as well!

Confessions of a Meat-eating Vegan – The writer of this article, in my opinion, was brave! There are so many people shaming others who are not vegan or vegetarian, shaming different types of eating habits and in general being mean. Not too long ago I saw a youtube video of a woman telling why and how she started eating meat again and she so much hate from people who were, at least claming, to be vegan. I think it is important that people talk about food and what is good for different people. As she says, one thing might not be the right thing for everybody.

Stay Strong Be Empowered

This year has not been easy. And I do not mean it has not been easy for me, but for our world. With each incident I seem to have less and less hope for the human kind and today when I heard the news, I wasn’t even surprised. Horrified, but not surprised. I thought of the furthest point I could move away from all this craziness, racism, selfishness and  narrow mindedness. Too bad Moon is not occupiable just yet.

Stay Strong Be Empowered - byLiiL

Of course, running away is not the answer, no matter how appealing it might sometimes feel. Now we just need to fight harder with educating ourselves to be more knowledgeable, understanding more, being more compassionate and being better. This year has already been one big learning experience.

There was a time when I didn’t think voting mattered, that I had any power over anything. But now I know, that if I do not vote then that voice is lost. And by ‘voting’ I do not only mean in elections, I also mean your choices, your behaviour and your consumption. This might sound funny, but every time you make a decision it is as if you are casting a vote towards that ‘meaning’. When you behave gracefully and do not laugh at a person who just fell in front of you, you are casting a vote to a more compassionate society that does not make fun of people. When you buy local produce, you are casting a vote to help out your local farmers against the big corporations.

At the moment I am afraid. I am afraid of the climate change and the planet. I am afraid for all the people who are being lied to and will struggle. I am afraid for the selfishness and narrow mindedness. I am afraid for the greed of big corporations and I am afraid of the monetary power they have over our decision makers.

Now I hope there is enough people, the will and power left to protect out planet so that we don’t need to resolve into fleeing away to the Moon.

Imposter Symptoms

You know the feeling when you feel sick and your family/friends tell you to go to the doctor, but then you start doubting your symptoms? You still feel the pain or discomfort as before, but you are not sure if you are just overreacting. It is disturbing your life but you don’t know if the doctor/GP will understand or believe you. Surely there are many other people who are much sicker than you who require the doctors time much more than you do!

Imposter symptoms - thoughts - byLiiL

I know to somebody this might sound silly and until recently I thought I was the only one who experienced this. But as always, I mentioned it out loud and found other people who felt the same way. It feels like slightly different kind of imposter syndrome. You start questioning yourself, your symptoms, whether you are overreacting. It could go away in a couple of days so why bother the doctor over it?

Well, let me tell you why. I am very thankful to my family for dragging me to the doctors when I was still thinking ‘I will go in a couple of days if it won’t get better’ whilst having a bad infection. We are not doctors and whilst I often imagine being very good at explaining symptoms, I do not have the education and knowledge to back it up. The doctors study for several years to be able to help you out, to help your discomfort and to prescribe medication to help you when you really are sick.

Imposter symptoms - thoughts - byLiiL

To those of you who are doubting your symptoms, stop. Believe in yourself and what you are feeling, and take care of yourself. Sometimes this is about going to the doctor. Although, I hope not too often!

Are you struggling from imposter symptoms?

What is sustainability?

It wasn’t too long ago when I got asked this question.

What is sustainability? What does it mean? What does it entail?

We do correlate the term sustainable usually to the environment, however, what is surprising is how little we actually understand it. And as I want to promote and discuss the sustainability within fashion and living I thought it was about time I would discuss the meaning of the term.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

To me sustainability means continuity. Continuity of our planet so that it will continue to provide us with earth to live on.

What can we do so that our planet will continue providing to us and supporting us?

Well, we can’t continue using pesticides and dropping toxins and waste on our planet. Earth erodes and pollutes, which harms us through food, water and air. If this will continue, we will not have the space to live, except in litter and we will run out of food and water before long, not even talking about other necessities. Instead, we can become mindful and conscious about what we consume, start making smarter decisions and demand companies to provide us with these options and letting us know about the whole lifecycle of the product. Sustainability is not a thing that only government, companies or consumers would have to think about. It is a thing that everybody should think about!

  • The innovation of ways to produce products and food, which keeps our earth providing more.
  • Shopping more consciously and products which we believe are not harming the environment (local, organic, etc.)
  • Companies which are openly fully transparent with their supply chain and production practices.
  • Reinforcing laws in the whole world to ensure the continuity of life on earth.
  • Making changes that we will continue making and adapting. Rather than having it as a trend it should be a movement.
  • Worldwide\ knowledge and information about the problems and how to tackle them.

I don’t think people will ever stop shopping or wanting new things, but I do think that innovation towards easier ways to recycle products and waste less would be a great start in combination with non-harmful production.

What do you think is sustainability? Have I left anything out in your opinion?

With love,

Lii

Thoughts of an introvert – Socially awkward complimenting

Complimenting other people on their appearance, success or any other aspect is part of people’s daily life. Well, it should be. It makes the receiver of the compliment feel special and appreciated (in most cases). I see people who compliment all the time and about the smallest of things from nice trousers and beautiful haircut to a great strength. Most often the compliments bring joy, however, sadly there are occasions when they are placed to butter somebody up or in a sarcastic tone. Then there are those people who never really say any true compliments, other than the agreement with others “yes, it really is beautiful”. The reserved type who almost seem rude.

Let’s think about it like this. What goes in their head? It could be something like this:

Oh wow, I really like her top. I should probably say it, but not now, now is not the right time. When could be a good time? Well, she is speaking to somebody else just now. She probably isn’t even interested in my opinion, why would I bother her with it, no point in saying it out loud. But then, it could also make her feel great or make her day… or she will think I am saying it sarcastically and laughing at her. If I do it genuinely she shouldn’t feel like that, though. But whenever I open my mouth I sound strange and awkward. Oh, but now it’s been too long and it would be out of context if I’d compliment her now, I do not want to seem stupid and awkward.

All of this might be going in somebody’s head while others see a girl standing there staring at the top with a strange expression and wonder whether there is something wrong with it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Well, this is me. Being an introvert socialising with people feels very awkward and most of the time I end up analysing situations and my behaviour rather than actually socialising, especially if it is with strangers or less familiar people. In addition, after I have opened my mouth and said something I end up analysing it afterwards and scrutinising myself over how awkward I sounded. This year I finally made a goal to get better at socialising with people (yes, that does sound cringe even to me). I decided to start complimenting people. It shouldn’t be such a complex task and it something positive. It is now August and we are nearing the last 4 months of this year. What is my progress in this task I set out for myself?

As always I do try to smile to most people I meet. Whether it is the bus driver, the cashier or somebody at work, to most of them, I also say hi. This has backfired a little, though. On my way home or away from there I usually walk this one busy street where this younger man was nice enough to say hi to me once or twice. He is a complete stranger and I thought I was getting better at this. Until I realised that he was standing at different points of the street almost every single time I walked there and only said ‘hi’ to me. I felt a bit creeped out and have been keeping an eye that he is not following me home. Maybe, I shouldn’t be saying ‘hi’ to every single person.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

What comes to complimenting, on the other hand, I found it to be more difficult than I thought. I’ve made one compliment to a stranger in the whole 8 months. Even then I was cringing and pondering on it for a while whether I should say it. At a coffee stand, I ordered coffee from this girl with bold and colourful nails. She worked there alone and people passing by were always very busy. I complimented her on the nails on the very last second before I left the stand and after I thanked her for my coffee and she did smile. I don’t know if I made her day just that bit better or not, but I like to think that I did. I was genuine in my compliment. I did analyse the situation for a while afterwards, but it didn’t make me feel any worse and it certainly didn’t make my day any worse. I should definitely work on complimenting more!

The point of this is, I guess, that those of you who feel awkward talking out loud, you are not alone. There are many others who do as well. Who over analyse situations and feel awkward next to their bubbly amazing friends. But then, I do look behind those other people too who might not say so much and I understand them. I do not compliment often, even my friends and family, but when I do, I really really mean it and it makes it more special those times. And to those who think quiet people are rude, they might not be. It could be just that they are over analysing things in their head. I would still take a genuine compliment from a person rarely than feel that it is ingenuine and mocking.

How do you feel about complimenting people?

Lii
