Happy Favourites of the Week – Spring Vacation

A vacation – I went for a vacation to Crete for a week, which was very much needed although confusing. I am not used to taking it easy during the day, so when all we could do was stroll slowly through the city, sitting on the beach, staring at the ocean and enjoying our time together. It was wonderful and it was so difficult to get back to a routine once I was home.

Gelato – During my holiday not a day went by without some gelato. I was sad that I couldn’t find any kiwi gelato, but pistachio and coconut were good second options! Gelato was also a saviour on those truly hot days when you felt like you were just overheating.

Chania – Chania is a beautiful little city with great restaurants and cafes to enjoy the delicious Greek food. I tried so many new things and was surprised how I enjoyed everything. In addition, we visited archaeological museum and 3 different beaches during our stay. The most beautiful part is, of course, the Venetian harbour and the Lighthouse, although I felt all the touristy restaurants along the harbour did cheapen the experience a little bit. Crete has a deep history and anybody interested in history can definitely find lots to do there!

Fashion Revolution Week – Although I was away for half of the week from my usual routine and I couldn’t find any events in Chania, I ended up just following what is happening on Instagram and was so impressed and inspired by all the people who were posting about this great movement! Now I think we should be continuing on demanding more sustainable and transparent supply chains from all fashion brands and not just during the Fashion Revolution week!

Swim in the Sea – I haven’t swum in the sea or a lake in a few years. Growing up in Finland we spent our summers swimming mostly, so now that I finally had a chance to go swimming I took it, even though the sea wasn’t quite warm enough. Actually, the sea was freezing cold, but spending some time in it made it feel warmer, and it was such an enjoyment and so refreshing!

Eugene Onegin – Yesterday I went to see an opera Eugene Onegin. I love mixing some culture into my everyday life and this tragic love story was quite a delight. For such a small theatre it was very well made and the singers and the ballet dancer were great!

Cherry Blossoms – I was afraid that I would miss the cherry blossoms while I was away and it is my favourite thing during the spring in Scotland. So I was over the moon to see that they are only starting to bloom around the city and I can enjoy their full blooming period now! They are so beautiful!!

The Alps – While on the plain to Crete I saw the Alps, and I couldn’t take my eyes of the magnificent beauty of them! Definitely my favourite thing on an otherwise boring flight!

Magnificent sunset – I love sunsets and often watch them, when possible, from my window. So seeing one in Crete whilst having a long and quiet dinner was such a delight. That was definitely slowing down and enjoying the moment. The sounds of the sea and birds and the colourful sunset with a glass of wine, what more could you want!

Happy Favourites of the Week – Spring Time

Visiting Friends – We had a fun night with friends playing Cards Against Humanity with visiting friends. We hadn’t had laughs quite as good in a long time! It was an absolutely fun night!

Easter Weekend – Although, I was working on a couple of the days during the Easter break it was still amazingly relaxing weekend full of delicious food and chocolate.

New Deodorant – I absolutely love my deodorant from Fine, but with its price tag I am happy that I’ve found another one, closer to home that has a much better price tag for my wallet! Evolve beauty have recently come out with a deodorant which is lovely! It is moisturising and doesn’t have a strong scent, in addition, it actually works and it’s made out of all natural ingredients. What more could you want! I do warn though, it has bicarbonate of soda. I wasn’t sure if my armpits could handle it and that is why I haven’t tried most natural deodorants in the UK, but Evolve also have small sample packs which helps you try whether it is suitable for you!

Spring Flowers – Spring brings spring flowers and oh how I love looking at them and smelling them, it is just such a delight! Having fresh tulips in the house lifts your mood like nothing else! I can’t wait until mongolia and cherry trees start to flower in front of our house. I’ve seen them flowering elsewhere, but I live slightly higher up and it comes later here.

A Lifecycle of a T-shirt – This little Ted-ed clip was great at explaining the process a garment goes through and how it pollutes the world. Although, I would’ve loved if they added how sustainable fashion is different to show a comparison! Still, the clip is very informative and interesting, especially for people who do not work in the fashion industry.

I finally finished Women Who Run With The Wolves – It felt like a process going through this book. It is not an easy read, but then again it is not supposed to be. It is a book full of ancient women’s wisdom for empowering women to be themselves and understand the psychological cycles they go through at different times of their life. It taught me a lot and I really recommend everybody to read it!

Cat’s New Scratching Post – Actually it is their first proper scratching post. I wanted them to stop scratching our couch! So I finally got a small scratching post with a little toy in it and two places to sit and it is slowly gaining acceptance with the cats. One of them loves to scratch it and the other one loves another spot for him to sit and stare at us from.

Happy Favourites of the Week – Something Good

A gentleman in Moscow – I finally finished this book! I was very intrigued to read it, but from the beginning, I felt like the book was dragging. It was written in a very upbeat sense, but somehow I found it hard to get my head around the book. Until I got to the middle point and then I was hooked. This book is situated in Moscow at a time of revolution and tells a story of how people had to adapt to their new lives. Unlike many such books, this held the focus on beautiful relationships, beautiful memories and beautiful food.

Starting Good Summit – I get to participate in a starting good virtual summit where I get to expand my knowledge on sustainability issues and how to work to make things better! There have already been so many great talks and inspiring ideas. Ernesto Sirolli’s Changing the way how to give aid was very passionate, but also with a great point! And Jan talking about the future of work was something everybody should listen to, to be prepared for the future of their careers. If you are interested in this go check them out: Starting Good Virtual Summit.

Fiance making dessert – This is a rare treat to get fiance to make me different desserts that we’ve not tried before. I am usually the one who makes desserts so it is great that I do not have to be doing it!

Spring is on its way – It might not seem like spring is coming, but there have been a couple of nice sunny days, which are rare in Glasgow. Also, the ever-horrible/wonderful appearing spiders… they are back. I might be okay with them if the warmer days are on their way! We moved our clocks last night, and although today is a bit of a tired day I know that there is more sunlight every single day! I can’t wait for Easter next weekend!

Meeting new inspiring people – I am doing a certain course this week, where I’ve met several very inspiring people with different skills that I am very admirable of. It’s wonderful to see people who are different and can work so well together!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Something Good - byLiiL

World Water Day and Earth Hour – This week saw two important dates to connect us to our planet, one for the water and one for the earth. Both immensely important and I was really inspired by all the posts on Instagram and around the web to support this connectivity. We are all fighting to have a better place to live in and have a better place for our future generations so we should be working on this together!

I won a book – I am taking part in the Our Shared Shelf – book club and a couple of weeks ago got the notice that I won their last book club book, which I hadn’t yet read or acquired: Why I No Longer Talk About Race With White People. I am excited to read the book and about winning a small competition!

The Best Coconut Oil – We often don’t even think whether the food we eat actually is sustainably produced. So I was really happy to find out that Reviews.com did a research into several coconut oil brands and their coconut oil production and checked which ones are actually produced sustainably. Luckily for readers who live in states, this review considers mainly USA brands. For the rest of you, I thought this was a great article to see how you can question what you put into and onto your body. How to figure out whether it is sustainably sourced and how to go about it. I would still love to learn a lot more about this topic but this was definitely a great start!

Happy Favourites of the Week – International Women’s Day

Snow – There are good and bad things with the snow, but as I try to look at the positive in my daily life, I choose to enjoy the few extra days that I could spend at home with my other half, cosying with hot drinks and looking out at the beautiful scenery. The bad stuff, you can read either in my blog post about why we should be grateful for having a home or check my Instagram account.

iZombie – The funny thing is that I can’t stand watching zombie related movies or tv-shows (still for some reason I’ve seen way too many…). I feel uncomfortable watching them and it’s also why it’s taken so long to start watching iZombie. But my friend talked me into watching it and now I’m hooked. Although, one night, after watching the show for way too long, I saw dreams of zombies the whole night and it frustrated me a lot. Now I try to do something else right before going to bed!

International Women’s Day – Celebrating a day that celebrates all women is awesome, isn’t it! I was so inspired by all the empowering messages on Instagram and the girl power going on there. It brings a smile on my face every time I check Instagram.

Succulent Gift – I also love a present I got from my fiance for the women’s day. He brought me two little succulent plants. So cute and a gift that will bring me happiness for a long time!

Seeing the Musical Priscilla – My friend gave me a present of taking me to a theatre to see the musical Priscilla and it was fabulous! The musical was very well done, with great singers and actors, absolutely amazing costumes and with so much laughter. Even though it wasn’t an audience participation show, the whole audience was involved. There was whistling, clapping, hurrays, laughing, so much fun!

New From Lush – I’ve been out of my favourite Lush products for a while now, but now finally that the snow melted I could go and get the items I was desperately needing; shampoo, cuticle cream – can’t live without them! Also now my bathroom smells like Lush again!

What Was I Up To In February 2018

February was a cold cold month when I’ve been just trying to keep warm and dreaming of warmer months to come. I had a small city trip to London to see a friend and was still so inspired by my visit to the greenshowroom that I’ve been sketching several posts about sustainability which still need a bit more finetuning before posting them. So stay tuned for that!

5 Article about - Is it Really Ethical? - byLiiL

The couple of posts that I did post about sustainability were the Sustainable News of January, The Ethical Jewellery and about Cred Jewellery and finally shared links to various posts discussing whether they think certain topics are ethical or not, such as is vegan leather sustainable.

February is also a month of lovers with Valentine’s Day and I argued that it should be a day to celebrate all the love, not just lovers. I also enjoyed naps in the sunlight and reading great books, and I shared my favourite Instagram pictures of January.

What Was I Up To In January

January was a renewed inspiration for sustainability after my visit to the greenshowroom in Berlin. Only to put all that inspiration on paper, but it’ll come I promise you. It is funny how even events where you think they didn’t offer as much new information as you’d hoped can still inspire you by offering you hope that this is the way forward. When thousands of people gather to see how we can make our world healthier and lives of the people fairer, even innovate a new way to run the whole business, it tells me that I am not alone, that there is many of us who want to change how things are done currently.

Goals and Reflections - byLiiL

Like everybody else, I reflected on my previous year and it’s successes, as well as reflected on what I wrote about sustainability on the blog. I learned a lot about sustainability last year, even if sometimes it doesn’t feel like it when there is still so much to learn, but that just pushes me forward. I am very thankful for the year I had in 2017 and can only hope that 2018 will be as good, although I planned to make it better. I reviewed the last 12 books that I read in 2017 and started in January with several interesting books, hopeful to continue with as many other interesting books!

The 3rd 12 Books of 2017 - byLiiL

I also had my birthday in January and received a beautiful present from my fiance, ethical earrings, about which I can’t wait to write about.

Happy Favourites of the Week - Birthday and Greenshowroom - byLiiL

I thought that I want to make this blog even more just about sustainability, but then I wanted to share the favourite Instagram pics that I’d found in December, and I know I want to write about feminism and what I learn about it as well. I guess it all comes together in the end. I want this blog to be an inspirational place to live better whilst supporting yourself and the world as well!

Happy Favourites of the Week - Books and New Year - byLiiL

Let’s hope February will be cheerier with more sunshine and more innovative news what comes to sustainability and feminism! How was your January, I would really like to know!

Goals and Reflections

As the year of 2018 began I scrolled through so many goals posts and New Years resolution posts it just made me depressed. I ended the year 2017 with a couple of colds one after the other and started the year 2018 with yet another cold, so I didn’t have the energy for much else than watching Netflix and drinking my new favourite Pukka tea. I thought to myself every day that I need to now make the new diary and start planning this year, but the task seemed pointless when it was already the 5th of January and everybody had already started working on their goals rather than just thinking about them.

Goals and Reflections - byLiiL

Then I read the blog post by Rebecca from roses about how she also started the year with a cold and how she decided not to let it bother her, and I realised that is exactly how I should be thinking about it as well! New Years is for many the time to start over, but I don’t think I am starting over, I will be continuing with the goals I set last year and building on them with maybe a couple of new ones. But the funny thing is that I didn’t wait until new years to set those goals, I’ve thought of them earlier and started working on them. On New Years I like to reflect on how I did with the goals I set the previous year and then see if I need to refine anything for the coming year. This doesn’t need to be done right after the year changes, but whenever I feel that I need to do it. In the words of my partner “New Years is just one day among the rest of them” the only speciality of it is that our culture has decided to follow this calendar system when the year changes on a certain date. There are other cultures where they might follow another way to follow years and when they change.

Goals and Reflections - byLiiL

It is, of course, easier, after the long holiday break, to get back to business if you have goals, and it is great to make plans to go to the gym to lose all the holiday weight. However, the way I see it, it is quite awful to start working on all those plans straight away with the highest productivity at a time when it is dark and damp and the only thing you want to do is sleep and eat those delicious comfort foods you can get delivered to your door. I feel much more motivated and alive in the spring when nature is coming to life and there is more light. That is the time I feel at my most productive and inspired!

So if you feel left out, like I, from all the goal setting, don’t worry. There are still over 300 days to set goals for this year and many more to set goals for your life! And if you have any trouble to reflect or make goals you should check this post by Anuschka Rees.

Goals and Reflections - byLiiL

REFLECTING ON 2017

You can see what goals I set for myself in 2017 here.

My year of 2017 was tough and demanding in many ways, but also one of the happiest I’ve had so far! I got recognition as a freelancer and due to getting out of my shell and actually talking to people and networking I got more work, was able to gain my main income from freelance work and got great contacts for the future! This was hard but very rewarding! I used my money smartly and only on things I felt I needed. I got engaged, which will mark this year deep into my heart and I met my godson who I will love forever!

The goals that I did achieve were:

  • The reading challenge of reading 24 books, which I exceeded by reading 36, more on them in another post.
  • I kept most of my plants alive and learned better to understand what they need. I also finally got a book about plants for Christmas!
  • I made great leaps in understanding sustainability not only in fashion and textiles but on a much wider and global scale. The biggest thing I learned is that the problem is much more widespread and rooted into our culture and the humankind and it will take a lot of hard work to change our culture into a more mindful and nurturing towards our planet.

I still need to work a lot on German, yoga and photography!

Goals and Reflections - byLiiL

MY GOALS FOR THE YEAR 2018

  • Holidays and Trips – I have several trips scheduled for this year either for work, seeing family or just a holiday. My goal is to actually make them all come true and be a sustainable traveller at that.
  • Family and Friends – Spending more time with family and friends who are close to me. We live quite far away from our families and so need to make extra effort to see them and keep in touch with them. I know that I feel better after talking to my family and friends and I want to share the same feeling with them!
  • Being healthy – In my body and in my mind. When I get busier with my work I seem to lose touch with keeping myself healthy, maybe that is why I’ve got so many colds in the past couple of months? So as I want to progress with my career I need to remember to take care of myself and listen to myself. In other words more yoga, meditation and walks outside alone or with a friend!
  • Sustainable life – make at least 3 changes for a more sustainable life. Only 3 because I realise that I want to properly change my lifestyle to accommodate the changes and because 3 is attainable.
  • Learn German – I am sure this will be on my goals list until I will be fluent in it!
  • Social skills – As I saw already some development in my social skills I would like to develop them more and be more comfortable around people.
  • Time for creativity – I realise that the reason I didn’t achieve some of my goals is that I didn’t give them the time to actually be creative with it and trying things out. So now I need to give myself time to be creative with photography, writing and any other creative endeavours I come up with!

Goals and Reflections - byLiiL

2017 was great! I am now more confident with myself and my career. I couldn’t be happier with my partner who supports me in anything I do and loves me unconditionally. I have a great life and I am striving to make others lives better. So now I hope my 2018 will be even better!

What are your goals for 2018? Have you made goals? What do you wish for 2018?

With love,

Lii
